September 30, 2013, Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, CA - The Royal Court, a nonprofit group dedicated to providing education and services within the LGBT community, hosted its first annual fundraiser, a semi-formal dinner and show called the Black and White Ball which raised $2,00 towards the creation of a Spanish-speaking Parents and Families of Le****ns and G**s (PFLAG) chapter in the community of Boyle Heights. The event was organized by Queen Victoria of The Royal Court, with the support of 25+ volunteers who collectively donated more than two hundred hours of their time.
Held at the International Institute on Saturday, September 21, 2013, The Black and White Ball gathered over 200 community members and nonprofit professionals in a picturesque hacienda-style courtyard. Attendees representing organizations ranging from grassroots arts organizations to community development corporations were treated to a sit down dinner prepared by promotoras from Legacy LA, live mariachi music and performances. The Royal Court presented awards to Martha Gonzalez, a community organizer and promotora, for her excellence in service to Boyle Heights, and Juan Castillo, an activist and Public Education Director with Latino Equality Alliance, for his work in advocating for the Latino LGBT movement. Las Fotos Project, a Boyle Heights-based program that teaches young Latina women facing adversity a set of skills such as photography and creative writing, also received an award for its innovative service and support of the LGBT community.
Sponsors of the Boyle Heights Black and White Ball included: Legacy LA, Latino Equality Alliance, The California Endowment, The Wall Las Memorias Project, East LA Community Corporation, Transforming Lives Center, Weingart East LA YMCA, Innercity Struggle, Lambda Legal, and the Zamora Brothers. The International Institute and Puente Learning Center provided in-kind donations.
