The mission of The 1000 Bikes Foundation is to enhance the quality of life of foster youth and their foster families by exposing them to healthier lifestyles that can impact their family, environment, local and global communities. An avid biker and cycling enthusiast, Mike, or CoolAssMike as he is known in riding circles, had participated in “rides” throughout California, New York and Miami for ye

ars. While riding through Los Angeles, Mike began to desire a greater structure and purpose to his rides. He realized that if people could come together to ride a bike, with sometime up to 15,000 people on the road at one time, he can use that momentum and those numbers for a greater community impact. In April 2010, Mike decided to organize his own monthly group ride “TheCoolAssRide” which was a purposeful 20 mile ride with over 100 youth and families, many equipped with CoolAssRide t-shirts. The inaugural ride began in mid-Wilshire’s historic Lafayette Park, went though Hollywood, Silver Lake, Hancock Park, Los Angeles and back to the Lafayette Park. Following the ride, Mike searched for a charity to donate proceeds from the sales of his t-shirts, but none seemed to merge his passion for bikes, family and his personal connection to youth living in the foster care system. Through his experience in foster homes he understood the need to help facilitate bonding activities for youth entering new homes, which he noticed was often missing. From that passion, the 1000 Bikes Foundation was founded. The 1000 Bikes Foundation is a not-for-profit organization which is dedicated to putting a bike in the hands of 1000 foster youth and their families in communities across the United States. The 1000 Bikes Foundation is more than just a charity; it is a movement that creates a 1000 bike tredmark in every city it rides through. Through the giving of equipment, education and demonstration projects, 1000 Bikes promotes the use of bicycles to foster youth and their families as a way of looking beyond their current situation, facilitating family bonding and encouraging healthier lifestyles. The 1000 Bikes Foundation is committed to creating a future for youth by shaping its efforts around four core values:

I am a happy, smiling, and fun father to be around and other parents like me.

Many fathers are great at the bar or party but get awkward in parental settings due to their own impostor syndrome. Feeling like everyone is judging them for something compared to all the happy go lucky dads. Taking ourselves out of the moment because of our own baggage.

Lighten up and let it go. Relax and enjoy being there. Mingle, respectively within Covid, but introduce yourself to other parents.
When I first became a parent I felt judged and like everyone was looking at me for all sorts of reasons.

ALLTHAT CRAP WAS IN MY HEAD!
Once I let that kind of thinking go and replaced with internal thoughts of acceptance and belonging, I was able to network and meet parents, which allowed me to make sure my daughter gets
Invited to her friends events, because they are comfortable speaking to me and then inviting Niya. Or vice versa, you may need to invite kids your kid’s birthday, and need to be inviting.

Money doesn’t resolve this, people skills do.

And it demonstrates the ability to get over yourself to your children.

No gift will ever match the gift of your love and affection you will have given to your children over the years.

Fellow dads, if there is one thing that rings true, no matter what the movie plot is, what income bracket you grow up in, or geographical location you find living beings, this statement is a FACT.

The good news, it easy to provide these two gifts. Keep showing and be present.

It doesn’t matter what our fathers did or didn’t do. We have the opportunity to make things right while we forgive whatever we hold against our fathers.

Showing up for our children is more important than any gift, piece of clothing, amount of money, or THING in the world for them. As fathers we get caught in the need to provide and that can mean a lot of time working.

When were done working hard and long hours we often like to relax somehow and that can be outside the home. Or being at home, but not actually being present.

Part of being a great dad is investing our time and energy into our children so they can grow and blossom into strong, happy, smart, and independent adults!

Choosing not to hate is a strong choice because it takes over your rational thinking and hands your control over to an emotion, which can be manipulated by external sources. Giving away power to our own emotions and happiness.

Choose conflict resolution, empathy, tolerance, or simple patience over hate any time. Our children will build a new reality with this mindset. Something we had to learn through memes like this!
