ACME Screening Room

ACME Screening Room Independent and documentary films, plus meet-the-Director Q&A's, and post-film receptions and dinners

The ACME Screening Room is a non-profit weekly independent and documentary film series. The series regularly features guest speakers (authors, directors, activists), post-film discussion programs and/or exhibitions and dinners, held in conjunction with a film. Our programs bring the world of film to life for our audience members and create a space to reflect on films by artists at all levels: from local filmmakers to nationally recognized professionals.

Opens Sun May 24 440pm Sophy Romvari’s “Blue Heron” exists in that space between home movies and art, between reality and memory. This devastating drama is an act of remembrance for its filmmaker, who has been open about how much of this story is her own. It’s also a reminder of the power of filmmaking to turn the deeply personal into relatable art, and an announcement of a major talent, one who has made the best film of the year to date.

Opens Sat May 23 750pm Hokum is an incredibly well-made thriller that continues Irish filmmaker Damian McCarthy's obsession with making you jump and also think about where horror comes from, using supernatural means to tell stories of human evil. It's one of the most compelling "the scary thing is a manifestation of trauma/guilt" movies because it actually cares about scaring you first and foremost. 89% on Rotten Tomatoes

Meet this years LHFF judges. First- Brad Anderson. Brad is an American film director, producer, and writer who got his start in filmmaking early — receiving a Super 8 camera at age ten — and then later trained at the London International Film School. He first gained attention with a string of indie romantic comedies that premiered at Sundance, before pivoting to the psychological thrillers and horror films he's best known for, including Session 9 (2001), The Machinist (2004) starring Christian Bale, and The Call (2013) with Halle Berry. Beyond features, Anderson has also made a significant mark in television, directing episodes of prestige series such as The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, and the sci-fi drama Fringe.
