Winter riding 2020-2021;
Fitting comfortably into the category of small group gatherings, the Maine Coast Cycling begins the winter season this Sunday at 9:00am. Start and finish location will be Mainely Bicycle, 169 Port Road, Lower Village, Kennebunk.
The rules I have used to determine whether to ride or not.
1. The temperature should be 20 degrees or higher for most of the ride.
2. The roads should be clear enough so cars can safely maneuver around us.
3. When in doubt ride the safer, slower option, studded tires if needs be. We will wait.

With sadness I read the obituary for Tom Decker this afternoon. Tom served as the first president of MC3, and served for many years. He leadership was fundamental in making the club something very special. Here is a link to the obituary below

ALTAMONT, N.Y. - Thomas "Tom" B. Decker, 76, formerly of Kennebunk, passed away May 31, 2020, with his loving wife, Therea, ...

Noticing our weekly ride description on our website mentions "rides include flats." Flat tires on our rides are optional, not a mandatory feature of the ride.

Also just a reminder the Sunday morning ride is active, leaving the Gorham Bike and Ski in Kennebunk at 8am.

I would like to thank the members of the Maine Coast Cycling Club for their donation to Nasson Bikes. Nasson Bikes is currently suspended because of the pandemic, but plan on getting back to work as the Sanford School system opens, with new opportunities as the new middle school opens.

Thanks again!

Peter Gilman sent along the following email about beginning the Sunday ride.

Hello All,
As you all know, it has been an odd spring with virus concerns and even snow in May.
We are all anxious to get some semblance of normalcy back into our lives. On that note, MC3 is resuming our organized group rides beginning next Sunday May 17 @ 0800. Our intention is to safely get back together with our fellow MC3 riders by following all guidelines for social distancing and self-quarantines.
• Maintain safe riding distances (6 feet)
• No groups larger than 6 riders
• No bunching up at stops or slow downs
• We expect that non-residents will adhere to Executive Orders for self-quarantining
• Plan to carry a mask with you in case you need to go into a local business like Hannaford or Gorham Bike and Ski.
As announced previously, beginning this riding season, MC3 will be riding out of Gorham Bike and Ski, next door to Hannaford in Kennebunk. (65 Portland Rd, Kennebunk, ME 04043)

Helena sent me this link to an article about spacing while riding together. It answered a question I had, and something to think about as we ride.

What is a safe distance when running, biking and walking during COVID-19 times? It is further than the typical 1–2 meter as prescribed in…

No group rides; The club has decided to suspend group rides during the current covid19 virus pandemic. We hope to be starting rides from Gorham Bike and Ski's Kennebunk location as soon as group gathering restrictions are lifted. Our feeling is it's still ok to ride with a few ride partners, but scheduled rides will too easily slip into the 10+ prohibited gathering group.

Sunday ride 3/22; We didn't have to worry about being over the limit for mass gatherings, as the 20 degree weather discouraged some folks. There is something about the color of the sea and sky you won't see except for a day like today however. Next week is the last ride from the Waterhouse Center, then we move to Gorham Bike and Ski in Kennebunk with an 8am start. We may be making adjustments to comply with Corona Virus recommendations as time goes on, so pay attention to emails and other messaging from the club.

Sunday Ride 3/15; Seven riders made it to our Sunday ride today. It was a fine day for a ride, with warming temperatures and sunny skies. Ice skating was over and the pickleball courts were emerging from under the remaining ice, a sign of spring. We made it to UNE, but the campus was almost deserted. The Kennebunkport Congregational Church was empty. Dave and I even found a place to sit at the bakery, a rarity on a Sunday morning. Lets hope for a return to normal as soon as possible.
Two more Sundays starting from the Waterhouse Center, then we move to our new location.

Since Covid-19 is on everyone's minds, this might be a good to write about the virus and it's effect on our group rides. We are fortunate our favorite form of exercise builds our immune system and can be done individually and in small groups safely. And our group rides will be small for awhile, because its cold!
We will be continuing our group rides, with a few reminders.
1. Don't ride on a group ride if you are sick
2. Don't share water bottles or snacks
3. No high fives when you get up and over Mount Hope or similar obstacle.
Riding outside individually or a small group is probably less risky than the gym.
Bicycling put out an a article which makes sense. Below is the link.
