Located in the upscale River Oaks Shopping Center at the corner of West Gray and Shepherd, the River Oaks is one of Houston's last true movie palaces, having kept its beautifully ornate Art Deco interior since it opened its doors in November, 1939, with the film Bachelor Mother starring David Niven and Ginger Rogers. The Houston Post described the theatre as “. . .thoroughly modern in every respec

t. Quiet dignity rather than garish display is reflected in the color scheme and appointments of the interior.” At its inception, the theatre was operated by the Interstate Theatre chain, run by Karl Hoblitzelle, who once said, “the entertainment industry, more than any other business, is built upon good relations with the public.” That policy still exists today as the management team of the River Oaks works very closely with many community groups in marketing independent and foreign language films. The River Oaks has boasted many world premiere engagements and features an eclectic mix of Friday and Saturday midnight shows. Visit the River Oaks for Houston's best independent film and foreign language cinema and cap the evening by visiting La Griglia or any of the other award-winning international restaurants surrounding the theatre. Enjoy a drink before or after the film at the River Oaks Lounge:

Breaking news: New Owners of the River Oaks Shopping Center--merger has been approved with Kimco Realty effective 8/4/21. Kimco has inherited two lease applications for the River Oaks Theatre, one from a commercial operator which is being negotiated, and the other (in backup position) from —YOUR community based nonprofit (in formation).

We are hopeful that we can be actively involved in supporting and preserving the cinematic future of the River Oaks Theatre in every way possible.

Community Supporters should take and share our survey. Your input will be shared with Kimco and could help the theatre!
Thanks!

URGENT: The merger of Kimco Realty and Weingarten is days away. We need to impress the new owner with data that shows theatre supporters come from all over the city and repeatedly. Information about the March 27 benefit show and art auction can be found at the link below. This is not a program of Landmark Theatres. We have been getting questions about it, so here it is for you to explore: Warehouse Live and the River Oaks Theatre Rocky Horror Picture Show Shadowcast, CHAOS, will present a variety show and benefit on March 27, which will raise money to help ensure that the Historic River Oaks Theatre does not become yet another lost Houston icon. Find incredible Houston rarities and art in the silent auction and take in some of Houston's finest performances during the 3-hour Benefit Show. The show is hosted by local burlesque MC Zach Deville and stars various local acts and talent from Houston's burlesque, comedy, and musical worlds. Doors open at 7:00 PM. The show begins at 8:00 PM and will run for approximately three hours with an intermission. The Benefit is socially distanced and all guests are required to wear a mask. Tickets On Sale Now!

Dear Loyal Supporters:
Regrettably, after 45 years of bringing Houston the best of art house cinema, today is Landmark Theatre's last day of operation at the River Oaks Theatre. We have been so incredibly fortunate to have made movie memories with you all, from the early days of classics and cult favorites to the Oscar contenders and those raucous late night audience participation staples THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW and THE ROOM.

Thank you for being a friend. Thank you for sharing your personal connections to the River Oaks over this past month. We agree that movie theaters are sacred spaces and we hope that the Friends of River Oaks Theatre can find a way to preserve and protect this special place that has brought so much to the cultural landscape of Houston.

It isn't goodbye. In the wisdom of NOMADLAND, we'll see you down the road. When Landmark lands in a new location, if you are on our email list, you better believe that you will hear from us. You can join our email list here: http://filmclub.landmarktheatres.com/
