in 1817, the first shovelful of dirt was turned in Rome, NY, starting the construction of the Erie Canal. Eight years later the Erie Canal officially opened, signaling a new day not just for New York State, but for our young nation. Goods, people, and ideas began to flow from the Atlantic and into the American interior, shaping the United States into the country we enjoy today. Happy Independence Day ❤️🤍💙
