Court Square Theater was once the home of The Rockingham Motor Company (RMC), operating as one of the premier car dealers in Downtown Harrisonburg from the 1920s through the 1970s. In 1998 at the start of the downtown revitalization, Court Square Theater was carved out of the existing building along with 3 other businesses. The architecture of the old RMC was kept intact, with outside RMC crests b

eing preserved and duplicated on the inside of the theater. Elements from other Harrisonburg downtown business were also incorporated into the theater--the ticket box office came from the historic Kavanaugh hotel. Originally the Theater was named The Rockingham Theater to pay homage to the car company. In 2000 a group of local citizens who long dreamed of bolstering the arts within the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County communities, came together on the Rockingham Theater stage to form the non-profit organization now known as Arts Council of the Valley (ACV). ACV was charged with managing the theater as its performing arts branch and creating innovative partnerships in the arts amongst area civic organizations, businesses, schools, and certainly, artists. ACV operated Court Square Theater through Dec 31, 2025.

Arts Council of the Valley ceased operations of Court Square Theater on December 31, 2025.

Harrisonburg Redevelopment & Housing Authority, which owns the portion of the building that houses the theater, has announced a community effort to support Court Square Theater’s continued operation, including the setup of a public donation portal; you can check that out at harrisonburgrha.com/.

With heavy hearts, we share that Court Square Theater, operated by Arts Council of the Valley (ACV) since 2001, will close on Dec 31, 2025.

The ACV Board of Directors voted Dec 17 to cease operations of the theater at the conclusion of this calendar year. The loss of significant local government funding since the pandemic, coupled with decreasing audience turnout, led to the Board’s difficult decision.

For more than 25 years, Court Square Theater has played a significant role in the vibrancy of downtown Harrisonburg. From concerts and films of all kinds to dance performances and live theatre productions - and so much more - the theater has provided a special place to connect meaningfully with the performing arts in our community. We are so grateful to all patrons, performers, volunteers, sponsors, and staff members who have loved the theater and filled it with magic all this time.
