🏡 Creating a Dementia-Friendly Home
For someone living with Alzheimer’s or dementia, their surroundings can have a big impact on how safe, comfortable, and independent they feel. Small changes can make everyday life easier and help reduce confusion, frustration, and anxiety.
🏡 Simple Ways to Create a Dementia-Friendly Environment:
💡 Keep areas well-lit – Good lighting can help reduce shadows that may be confusing or frightening.
🚶 Clear walking paths – Remove clutter, loose rugs, cords, and other items that could cause falls.
🪧 Use simple signs and labels – Labeling doors, drawers, bathrooms, and commonly used items can make it easier to find things independently.
🕰️ Keep familiar items nearby – Family photos, favorite blankets, familiar furniture, and treasured belongings can provide comfort and reassurance.
🔇 Reduce unnecessary noise – Too much background noise from televisions, radios, or multiple conversations can become overwhelming.
🎨 Use contrast when helpful – Contrasting colors can make important items easier to see, such as a dark plate on a light-colored table.
🔒 Think about safety – Secure medications, cleaning supplies, sharp objects, and other potentially dangerous items while still allowing as much independence as possible.
📅 Keep routines and surroundings consistent – Familiarity can help someone living with dementia feel more secure and confident.
Most importantly, a dementia-friendly home should still feel like HOME. ❤️ It should be filled with familiar faces, treasured memories, comfort, patience, and love.
Sometimes the smallest changes can make the biggest difference in helping a person living with dementia feel safe, respected, and supported.
💜 Remember: We may not be able to change the diagnosis, but we can change the environment to better meet the person’s needs.
