๐๐๐๐ โ and why its bonkers mix of sci-fi and horror won him over.
I was nearly 40 years late to the ๐๐ช๐ง๐ฆ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ๐ค๐ฆ party. Up until I finally sat down to watch it a couple of years ago, all I knew was that it was directed by Tobe Hooper, involved space vampires, and featured a naked woman wandering around for a chunk of its runtime. It sounded ๐ข๐ธ๐ง๐ถl โ and youโd be forgiven for thinking the same thing.
Until you actually see it.
Two things become clear almost immediately. First, itโs remarkably well-crafted, with astonishing practical effects, makeup, and production design that make you wonder how a movie this bizarre wound up with such an enormous budget. Second, itโs almost relentlessly entertaining. I honestly donโt know anyone whoโs seen ๐๐ช๐ง๐ฆ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ๐ค๐ฆ and walked away calling it boring.
The film is practically overflowing with ideas, barreling from one outrageous B-movie set piece to the next. It throws Hammer horror, sci-fi, sexploitation, psychic possession, viral apocalypse, body horror, zombies, ghosts, and even a doomed love story into the same blender โ and somehow keeps the whole thing hurtling forward with absolute conviction.
As one Medium review perfectly put it:
โLifeforce has to be accepted as a movie with an inherently stupid and derivative central premise but it is also these factors which make it work and, amazingly, give it its own unique feelโฆ If this movie didnโt exist but we knew that it couldโve, then we would be lamenting its loss.
I adore ๐๐ช๐ง๐ฆ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ๐ค๐ฆ. I love its invention, its energy, its imagination, its refusal to even acknowledge what it means to show restraint because who the hell wants restraint in a space vampire movie anyway?... All these years later, there is still nothing quite like Lifeforce and, for that, it should be cherished, its little, shrieking, desiccated, exploding body held close to our hearts.โ
