Before Johnny Galecki ever stepped foot on the Big Bang Theory set, he had genuinely walked away from acting entirely, pursuing a completely different career path in the Midwest.

"My career has not been seamless," Galecki told Entertainment Tonight. "Immediately before 'Big Bang,' I was in Wisconsin studying plumbing." After a lull of nearly a year without landing acting work to the point where he began selling his own belongings, including his cello a friend named Bill in Chicago offered him an unexpected suggestion: "You would be really good at bathroom and spa design."

Galecki committed fully to the idea. "I said, 'If I go and I learn I'm going to go to Wisconsin where the Kohler plant is and then learn the plumbing of it all' and I did." With his friend agreeing to help fund the venture, Galecki relocated to Wisconsin to study plumbing at the Kohler facility, genuinely preparing to open his own design studio.

Then, while still at the plant, opportunity intervened. He received a call to guest star on a project, which led to his Broadway debut and it was during that same stretch that Chuck Lorre reached out about The Big Bang Theory.

Galecki has reflected on the moment with genuine wonder, once saying, "There's part of me that feels like there's definitely a nearby parallel universe and I'm still studying plumbing in Wisconsin."

When The Big Bang Theory's producers searched for the actress to play Amy Farrah Fowler in Season 3, the decision came down to a genuine two-way race between Mayim Bialik and Kate Micucci and the runner-up ended up leaving her fingerprints on the character regardless of who got the part.

Executive producer and writer Maria Ferrari revealed the full story on The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast with host Jessica Radloff. During Amy's audition process, Micucci improvised a specific joke about "tepid water" that impressed the writers so much they kept it in the script meaning the line that ultimately became part of Amy's actual on-screen debut, delivered by Bialik, was originally Micucci's own creation. "That was her joke, and they sent her, like, muffins or something, and she said they could use it," Ferrari revealed. Bialik, hearing the story for the first time on the podcast, laughed: "I should have known that! I would have sent her muffins."

Micucci herself confirmed the story to The Hollywood Reporter: "They thought of me for Lucy because I auditioned for Amy years ago, and they liked and kept me in the back of their minds. When this character came up, that's how I ended up playing Lucy." She went on to appear as Raj's anxious, easily overwhelmed girlfriend across eight episodes in Seasons 6 and 7 a role Micucci has spoken about with genuine warmth, praising Bialik's performance as Amy directly and admitting she rewatched certain Amy-Leonard scenes multiple times out of pure admiration.

One of The Big Bang Theory’s most consistently underappreciated recurring characters continues to attract genuine, passionate fan defense and the argument for Bert Kibbler’s wholesomeness holds up under scrutiny.

Bert the towering, socially awkward geologist played by Brian Posehn occupied a uniquely difficult position within the show’s social hierarchy. As a geologist among theoretical physicists, he became a consistent target for the guys’ condescension, treated as intellectually inferior simply because his field of study didn’t carry the same prestige as string theory or particle physics. The joke, repeated across multiple seasons, was always at his expense geology dismissed as “not a real science” despite Bert’s genuine expertise and passion for his work.

What fans consistently highlight is how Bert never let that treatment change who he was. Despite being isolated by the group’s dismissiveness and struggling with genuine romantic loneliness for years, Bert remained unfailingly kind generously offering to share his grant money with Raj when his friend needed it, showing up as a supportive presence whenever the group needed him, and never once responding to years of mockery with bitterness or cruelty.

His eventual marriage to Judy establishing a genuinely happy, stable domestic life felt like a well-earned reward for a character who had spent so long being the group’s easiest punchline while never once losing his fundamental decency.
