Tom Selleck doesn't fit in a Ferrari. At six foot four, he's much taller than the Italian drivers for whom the 308 GTS was designed. When the red Ferrari was cast as Thomas Magnum's ride in Magnum P.I., Selleck physically couldn't get into it. So Ferrari's team went in with tools. They removed all the padding from the driver's seat so that he could sit lower down. They unbolted the seat and moved it back as far as possible. Even after all that, the top of Selleck's head was still above the windshield frame. That's why you almost never see him driving with the targa top on in the show. It wouldn't physically close over him. Magnum was originally supposed to drive a Porsche 928, but Porsche refused to modify one. Ferrari agreed, and so a TV legend was born — out of a seat cushion.
