True/False Film Fest offers a heightened four-day weekend of creative placemaking in which filmmakers, artists, musicians and others remake the mid-sized college town of Columbia, Missouri into a one-of-a-kind utopia.

Black le***an video store employee and filmmaker Cheryl (Cheryl Dunye) decides to make a documentary about the Watermelon Woman, an actress who specialized in mammy roles in 1930s Hollywood. When Cheryl’s research reveals the identity of the Watermelon Woman, she learns about a secret behind-the-scenes in*******al le***an relationship, and soon finds herself in an in*******al relationship of her own, much to the chagrin of her best friend. ⁠

A landmark of New Q***r Cinema and the first American feature to be directed by a Black le***an, The Watermelon Woman is an insightful study of learning how to make your own legacy outside of oppressive frameworks. This screening will be preceded by a musical performance from ZamboniFunk.

Told largely through their own writings, this documentary illuminates the legacy of lawyer, activist, writer, and priest Pauli Murray whose ideas shaped the legal fight for gender equality and Civil Rights. ⁠

This screening will be followed by a community conversation led by Race Matters, Friends exploring topics such as race and gender discrimination and the law, the legal basis for universal rights, and intersectionality. ⁠

From our many film series to staff picks, now it’s your turn to choose which film advances and which goes home. Vote on our stories starting Friday, June 19 and then join us in person 6:15 p.m. June 27 for a Ragtag birthday pre-party before our screening of Bend It Like Beckham. There, we’ll have printed brackets for you to predict how it will all shake out. There might be prizes, too.
