Today, I took the Prop Gun safety course put on by Dutch Merrick. Dutch came up with this course in response to the Rust shooting incident.

The course started with a description of parts of a gun and bullet, then went into introduction to types of guns and how to safely unload/handle them. He had guns from flintlock through modern automatics (airsoft, blank, real & rubber), with hands on learning. Throughout the training he emphasized the gun safety rules.

Next everyone was given an opportunity to fire several blank rounds through a revolver and an automatic. While doing this everyone in rotation acted as the gun wrangler, simulating gun handling on set.

Moving on, we went through three scenario’s of basic shot set up, with emphasis on crew safety.
Each scenario included included an unexpected safety problem that had to be overcome by the group.

The last section was a review of lessons learned from on set tragedies and procedures that would have prevented the tragedy from happening.

Dutch also told us he is working on a follow up class that expands on the lessons learned in this class.

When I first decided to expand into gun wrangling, I looked for requirements and found there were no training programs or requirements. Coming from a military and police background this was hard to believe!

I attended this course to support Dutch in the start to a much needing training and licensing for gun wrangles within this industry. Gun wrangling needs to be its own speciality within the industry, similar to pyrotechnics Technician.

This month we picked up eight sets of Fire Fighter Turnouts plus extra parts. These Turnouts will compliment I.P.S. Transportation’s Crown Fire Truck.

This is a container moving trailer I picked up about a month ago, that needed repairs. It can also move 2-3 cars or palletized cargo.

In the last two weeks:
1. Replaced the batteries
2. Repaired hydraulic tilt system
3. Installed a Ramsey, #8000 lb winch
4. Added wireless remote for the winch
5. Picked up straps and chains
6. Picked up a bridle with J hooks
7. Picked up a container Bridle

Things left to do:
1. Rewire the electric brakes
2. Grease the bearings
3. Replace a couple deck boards.

Getting closer to being ready to use!

IPS offers wax bullets and air squibs through our SPFX division (IPS SPFX). This is a low cost alternative for realistic blood hits.

The first phot was a test shot of a wax bullet we did in preparation for a film. We can do these shots to the body or head.

The second shot was from a test shot of the air Squib for the same film. In this shot, a bullet passed through the head spraying blood on the wall. The victim then falls back against the wall and slides down the wall.

Here is a replica 105 howitzer we recently purchased. Once we arrange shipping from the east coast this will be available for rentals.

This style 105 howitzer was used from WW II through Viet-Nam and towed behind Jeep’s. We also have a WW II jeep under restoration to supplement this prop.

This has been rigged to fire on a acetylene/oxygen mixture that creates a bang and small flash.

A.M.P. Movie props is now part of Independent Production Services (IPS). Over time our services have expanded beyond props and wardrobe, to better advertise these services we we formed IPS.

IPS specializes in working with low budget productions. We have worked with 48 hr film festivals, low budget film and video productions for more then 15 years.

Currently IPS divisions/Services are:
1. A.M.P. Movie Props & Wardrobe
2. Desert Aire Studios
3. IPS, Movie cars (classic, police & military)
4. IPS, Armory (weapons & Armorer)
5. IPS, SPFX (Air squib, wax bullets, air cannons, rubber & foam items, ect)
6. IPS, Grip & Electric (later this year)

All of our wardrobe, props, vehicles, weapons, SPFX, Grip and Electric, or studio can be ordered /scheduled through any division you choose to do business with. We can do combined billing, or individual services billing.

Here are some dummy bullets for a scene. These bullets look real, because they are made from real bullet components. The difference is there is no powder charge and the primers are fake. You can tell these bullets from real bullets because there is a BB where the powder charge would be. So if you shake them next to your ear, you hear the BB bouncing inside the Bullet!

These bullets are not capable of being fired in any gun. these were acquired for a movie, I am the armorer on. I am suppling the guns, a mixture of solid cast plastic, airsoft and real guns (not being fired) only used for tear down scenes.

We have a variety of realistic looking solid plastic guns, airsoft, movie guns (moving parts but not capable of firing bullets), and blank firing pistols available for rent.

Here is a practical effect we are doing for a movie. The script requires a head shot, with blood spray on the wall.

This is my second attempt as I prepare for the scene later this week. Later in the week, I will also be doing multiple body shots with blood coming through actors shirt and soaking the shirt as they are shot multiple times.

This system uses low pressure compressed air and does not require any special licenses (pyro). It is quiet, only the sound of air. That works good for this scene since it’s a silenced pistol.

On Sunday we made silicone molds of M-4 and Beretta magazines. This week we will start casting plastic magazines to put into our tactical vest and Sam Brows.

While it has been a while since I have posted, things have been moving along.

1. spent six weeks working on A Grunts life 2 for vet TV.

2. a week at fort brag, NC getting additional uniforms.

3. picked up six M-4 replica movie guns. These guns are made just like a real M-4, but you can not chamber a round. They look and feel real but are made for movie sets.

4. added ten additional plastic Beretta pistols for use in police and military holsters.

5. Added five SWAT vest, with magazine (M-4 & Pistol) pouches and radio holders.

This is all I can remember off the top of my head, but we are always adding new inventory.

We are on set of a low budget movie that rented three police cars, a hero car (black Dodge Charger) and a roll over car (black Dodge Charger) from us.

We had about a weeks notice to find and prep a matching vehicle that we could use as a rollover vehicle.
