Please also know... we miss you terribly.

In the meantime, we encourage you to dip your toes into one of these fascinating titles:

Movie Theaters Are Still Dark. Long Live Their Marquees

You can thank us for all your sunny Thursdays this month.

“I always joke the movie gods are cruel because it always seems to rain on a Thursday evening,” (NP Program Director Ray Barker) said. “If we don’t have to change it, it’s always blue skies and sunshine.”

As the pandemic wears on, theaters across the country are using their marquees to share funny, moving, and nostalgic messages. Here are a few that have managed to keep spirits up in trying times.

Thank you to Lauren Hall of WGRZ - Channel 2, Buffalo for reporting on our Virtual Cinema this morning!

This week's wave of titles includes something for everyone—acclaimed docs, anime, a tragic refresher on recent Mayan history, and a dead sexy deerskin jacket—bumping our count of films to stream up to 40 (!).

As our Program Director Ray Barker told Lauren, "This is a way to help us connect with them and keep the community going."

🤑 CAPITAL IN THE 21st CENTURY: Based on the bestseller, this engaging new doc travels through time to shed new light on today’s growing inequalities.

😜 DEERSKIN: In this black comedy of middle-aged masculinity gone awry, Oscar winner Jean Dujardin (The Artist) is a recent divorcee who becomes obsessed with a vintage fringed deerskin jacket.

🎼 CRESCENDO: When a world famous conductor tries to create an Israeli-Palestinian orchestra, it takes all his skill and resources to overcome the discord and get them to play in harmony.

👷 AN ENGINEER IMAGINES: Learn about the life and work of Peter Rice, called "the James Joyce of structural engineering".

🌸 THE WONDERLAND: Don't miss this breathtaking new anime from MISS HOKUSAI director Keiichi Hara, featuring character designs by renowned Russian illustrator and GRIS designer Ilya Kuvshinov!

👩‍👦 OUR MOTHERS: A forensic anthropologist investigates the disappearance of his father during the Mayan Genocide.

Tickets and trailers available at www.northparktheatre.org.

⚪ A WHITE, WHITE DAY: In a remote Icelandic town, an off-duty police chief begins to suspect a local man of having had an affair with his late wife—suspicions that soon turn into obsession.

💕 SOMEONE SOMEWHERE: Boy doesn't meet girl in this perfect social distance romance!

🎺 SOUND! EUPHONIUM: THE MOVIE: Dub and Sub! Follow Kumiko as she gets the Kitauji High School concert band club ready for the National Championship competition.

🗿 EATING UP EASTER: A global wakeup call from the remote Pacific!

👩‍👦 DRIVEWAYS: A lonesome boy accompanies his mother on a trip to clean out his late aunt's house, and ends up forming an unexpected friendship with the retiree next door.

🎨 BOTERO: Learn the secrets behind Colombia's most beguiling artist, best known for his weirdly doughy signature style.

👷 EARTH: Nikolas Geyrhalter renders global land development as a slow-moving apocalypse in this awe-inspiring new doc.

🍻 HAPPY HOUR: Lose yourself in the misty seaside city of Kobe, Japan, following the daily lives of four thirtysomething women.

🤠 BULL: A teen reeling from her mom’s incarceration forms an unlikely bond with an aging bullfighter.

🐶 THE DOG DOC: Spend 2½ years behind the curtain with Dr. Marty Goldstein, veterinarian rockstar.

Happy Easter!

Cecil B. DeMille's THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1956) was a springtime fixture here at the North Park since at least 1961, when Lou Levitch, Jewish community leader and owner of Leci Theatre Corp., took ownership.

In his first year, Levitch ran the biblical epic as a fundraiser for Camp Jecosi of Temple Emanuel, the first Jewish Boy Scout Troop in the city.

The picture you see here is from ten years later in 1971. In that span of time, the theater changed ownership twice; but THE TEN COMMANDMENTS remained a big draw for North Buffalo, still a deeply Jewish neighborhood.

Thank you Jim Caughill for the shot!

Some good news!

This week, we were honored and relieved to be named among the first round of grant recipients of the Art-House America Campaign.

The Campaign is an ongoing fundraising effort created by The Criterion Collection and Art House Convergence, and has received support from cinema superstars like Christopher Nolan, Wes Anderson, Greta Gerwig, Ari Aster, and more.

Most of all, they are relying on the generosity of independent movie lovers like you.

They still need to raise the final 25% of their goal, so if you can, please consider donating this week.

Let's keep those marquees blinking, people! 💡

Soooo it’s raining and my plan to see American Graffiti on the big screen at Transit Drive-In is squashed. And that leaves my beloved North Park theater to screen it for us... #WaitingPatiently
