William Lee, an American expat in Mexico City, spends his days almost
entirely alone, except for a few contacts with other members of the
small American community. His encounter with Eugene Allerton, an expat
former soldier, new to the city, shows him, for the first time, that
it might be finally possible to establish an intimate connection with
somebody.

the story of a sixteenth-century village whose desperate inhabitants
hire the eponymous warriors to protect them from invading bandits.

“Times Square” – Nov 24th

Allan Moyle’s Times Square stars Trini Alvarado as Pammy, the quiet
and sheltered daughter of a prominent politician, and Robin Johnson as
Nicky, a charismatic streetwise troublemaker. In the film’s
unrealistic but somehow believable urban fantasy, the girls team up,
creating a home for themselves in a warehouse on the West Side piers,
and pursue various wild antics together against the gritty urban
backdrop of Times Square, with Tim Curry’s radio deejay Johnny
LaGuardia presiding over the entire adventure. The original script had
numerous scenes and plot elements that developed a sense of proto-
le***an romance; these were all significantly cut. Despite the
excision of explicit le***an content, Nicky and Pammy are decidedly
not interested in boys, and the romantic tone and tension in their
interactions is undeniable. Their anarchic chemistry is also
underscored by one of the greatest rock and roll soundtracks of all
time, featuring Patti Smith, the Pretenders, Talking Heads, the
Ramones, Roxy Music and Suzi Quatro.

In 2024, the long-thought lost 16mm reels of Tom Petty in Cameron
Crowe’s first film, “Heartbreakers Beach Party”, were finally found.
The classic ’80s documentary captures Tom Petty and the band in
1982-1983 as they finish, promote, and tour around the “Long After
Dark” album (their final with legendary producer Jimmy Iovine). After
its initial airing on MTV in 1983, the film was deemed too
experimental and abruptly pulled from the air. In the more than 40
years since, it has become folklore to fans, musicians and within the
entertainment industry — even credited with inspiring scenes in
Spinal Tap.

Directed by visionary science-fiction animator René Laloux (Fantastic
Planet) and designed by the legendary Jean Giraud (a.k.a. Mœbius) THE
TIME MASTERS is a visually fantastic foray into existentialist space
adventure. After his parents are killed on the dangerous planet
Perdide, young Piel (voiced by Frédéric Legros) survives by
maintaining radio contact with Jaffar, a pilot transporting the exiled
Prince Matton and Princess Belle from their former kingdom. Jaffar
seeks the help of Silbad, a cheerful old-timer who knows how to
circumvent Perdide’s hazards, including brain-devouring insects and
watery graves. Along the way, Jaffar and company encounter a pair of
impish homunculi stowaways, identity-less angels controlled by an
amorphous hive mind, and the Masters of Time, mysterious beings who
can bend reality and perhaps reveal to the heroes their secret origins
and destinies.

Look for Dan wearing a multicolored shirt in the theatre lobby about 15 minutes before the film. As always, after the film we will descend on a local establishment for dinner/drinks/discussion.

How to Come Alive with Norman Mailer explores the rollercoaster life
of America’s most controversial and bestselling author of the
twentieth century, Norman Mailer.

Propelled by his tremendous ego and contrarian spirit, Mailer’s
ceaseless visibility in the public eye lasted 6 decades, during which
he had 6 tumultuous marriages, 9 beloved children, 11 bestsellers, 3
arrests, and 2 Pulitzer Prizes. Prophet, hedonist, violent criminal,
literary outlaw, and social provocateur, Mailer’s ideas about love,
anger, fear, and courage cut to the core of human nature, are more
relevant than ever today, and point to a prescription for waking
ourselves up, shaking free of society’s expectations, and coming alive
as a people.

The first project with full access to Mailer’s family and their
archive, the film unearths a treasure trove of intimate and never-
before-seen footage, outtakes, audio recordings, and interviews from
throughout his life. Mailer lays himself bare, foibles and all. As a
lover, fighter, rabble-rouser, and perhaps the last true American
public intellectual, he seeks most of all to become a bolder, better
human being and encourages us to do the same — to think
adventurously, speak fearlessly, and care less about the response…
or risk a doomed future.
