What are 6 benefits of teaching with Primary Sources?
Policing has drastically evolved over the years, but training has been slow to follow. We must adapt for the myriad of calls from people that need mental health support.
In 2000, the San Antonio police department started an effort to provide crucial mental health resources, support and training, diverting people away from a crowded jail system and into impactful treatment programs.
From Academic Video Online and FILM PLATFORM, the award-winning documentary “Ernie & Joe: Crisis Cops” takes you on a ride-along with two key members of this mental health team as they work to provide the necessary support. Partners Ernie and Joe focus on the person, not the call, for their community and at the same time train their fellow officers on tactics to calm situations, differentiating each 911 call from another at the human level.

“It seems that I am too much an American.” – Benjamin Franklin
“I woke last night shaking from a frightful dream. We have come to the edge of the ocean and there is no advancing or retreating. My own sons may sink in the torrent. I wish I pray that there be some decent honorable way to put an end to this conflict. To be once again reconciled with old friends. Our cause is righteous and I have no doubt of final success. But I see our generation and perhaps our whole land drowned in blood.” – Sarah Scott
Typically, students see the American Revolution as an organized rebellion of a united people against an oppressive tyrannical government. In their estimation, the colonies simply rose up and gained their independence.
The truth was far from that. Although many colonists felt they deserved the equal rights and liberties of those in the mother country, they were not ready or willing to totally break away from the British Empire and start a new nation. They were "reluctant revolutionaries" who believed they were being denied basic rights and freedoms, but were not ready to take the “big step.”
The first in a 6-part Liberty series from and PBS, “The Reluctant Revolutionaries, 1763-1774” examines why the colonists, many of whom felt strong loyalties to the British Empire, decided to abandon their mother country and join the Revolution.

In 1763, the capitol city of America is London, George Washington is lobbying for a post in the British army, and no one thinks of Boston harbor when they hear talk of tea parties. In a dozen years, the colonies are on the brink of rebellion. What happens to bring this country so quickly near war wi...

ProQuest's Alexander Street products are curated, discipline-focused, primary-source collections, websites, and streaming media for learning and research. We’re passionate about creating landmark online resources that help scholars and students discover and learn.
Our collections deliver previously unavailable content in ways that further research and learning. Working closely with faculty, librarians, archives, and publishers, we develop our databases to the highest academic standards. We painstakingly secure copyrights, digitize the content, index the materials meticulously using semantic fields, add supporting reference and contextual material, and then publish the resulting collections on our award-winning online platform.
Our mission is to “make silent voices heard.”
Whether it’s previously unseen plays by Pulitzer Prize winners, the first available full run of an important publication such as The Black Panther Party Newspaper, or otherwise inaccessible historical archives, we love bringing otherwise “silent” and hidden gems to scholars and students. We’ve received dozens and dozens of “BEST” awards from industry publications (Library Journal and others for numerous projects in all our disciplines); organizations (e.g., History News Network for North American Women's Letters and Diaries); evaluation groups (The Charleston Advisor’s various awards); and industry watchers (e.g., EContent 100: The Companies that Matter Most in the Digital Content Industry).
We’re the world’s leading provider of academic streaming media to libraries. Our streaming video products range from exclusive, must-have titles (such as the Stanley Milgram video series and 60 MINUTES) to what’s become largest library-oriented video database in the world, Academic Video Online: Premium. We’ve partnered with top video producers around the world to deliver more than 60,000 video titles across all disciplines—and the list continues to grow—all running on the same high-functionality platform, with on-demand pricing, subscription options, and the ability to purchase perpetual rights to most of the content. We’ve made it easy for video to be part of the curriculum, by providing users with synchronously scrolling transcripts, indexing, clip-making, custom playlists, social media functionality, and other tools.
We’re particularly strong in the fields of counseling, anthropology, history, diversity studies, theatre, film, music, dance, news, current affairs, and the social sciences. In music and dance we provide more than 10 million streaming audio tracks, 1.3 million pages scores, and thousands of video performances, together with reference materials and primary sources.
Alexander Street collections have been innovations in the market including the creation of the first streaming audio and streaming video product available to libraries, the first full-text, authorized databases of in-copyright film scripts, and the full-text of underground comics and graphic novels, among others.
Alexander Street operations is headquartered at ProQuest's Alexandria, VA, office just outside of Washington, DC.
