Next in our Bleak Week spotlight: Brazil.

Terry Gilliam's audacious 1985 dystopia follows Sam Lowry, a low-ranking government clerk whose life unravels when he tries to correct a simple administrative error — and finds himself an enemy of the state. Anti-authoritarian, darkly comic, and more prescient than ever.

And we are thrilled to welcome filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe — who many of you will remember from his visits last fall for 78/52 and Chain Reactions — to introduce Brazil and discuss the film after both screenings on Tuesday. Movies are his life's passion, and to hear him speak about them is to find your own love of cinema reignited.

The last Cinema East of the season goes out on a high note. 🎸

Linda Linda Linda screens Thursday, June 4 on Bay St. — a Japanese high school band, a Korean exchange student who barely speaks Japanese, and a Blue Hearts cover that will stay with you long after the credits roll. Introduced by projectionist and writer Annie Bowmer.

Two showtimes: 11:00 AM and 7:45 PM.

Next in our Bleak Week spotlight: Safe.

Todd Haynes' unsettling 1995 masterpiece follows Carol White (Julianne Moore in one of the greatest performances ever committed to film) — a suburban housewife whose affluent, comfortable world begins to turn against her in ways she can't explain or escape. Bold, darkly comic, and completely original. There is nothing quite like it.

And we are thrilled to welcome actor Xander Berkeley — who plays Carol's husband Greg White opposite Julianne Moore — in person for a post-film Q&A. You know him from Terminator 2, The Walking Dead, Air Force One, Gattaca, and dozens of other films and TV shows. He will be right here at the Pickford. Do not miss this.

Monday, June 8 · 6:15 PM · Bay Street Cinema (with Xander Berkeley Q&A)
Encore: Wednesday, June 10 · 3:15 PM

Next in our Bleak Week spotlight: Wendy and Lucy.

Kelly Reichardt's quiet masterpiece follows Wendy Carroll (Michelle Williams) and her dog Lucy as they travel toward Alaska in search of work and a fresh start — until a car breakdown in Oregon unravels everything. A film about the thin line between stability and crisis, and what we owe each other in tough times.
