Austin Cinematheque

Austin Cinematheque Screenings are held on the UT campus in the Texas Union Theater. They are free and open to the public.
The Austin Cinematheque, a film collective at the University of Texas, promotes the continuing interest in repertory, independent, and art house films by providing free screenings at the campus theater.

The Austin Cinematheque, the community's only free repertory film series, was established at the University of Texas during the fall of 2005. At this time, the Varsity Theater had been vacant for 15 years, the Dobie Theater was shifting it's focus to more commercial works, and the only on-campus 35mm projector sat gathering dust between screenings of second-run blockbusters. Drawing inspiration from repertory programs all over the world, as well as former local programs like CinemaTexas, the Austin Cinematheque provided a self-funded screening of François Truffaut's THE 400 BLOWS in the Texas Union Theater and effectively kicked off what has become one of the most eclectic and publicly accessible repertory series in Austin.

AUSTIN CINEMATHEQUE: 3 OCTOBER 2011 -- UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES

Unfortunately, Austin misses out on most of the great first-run features. Since AFS at Dobie died a few years ago, there's been no venue for the most challenging and rewarding new films.

With that in mind, we decided to open our semester by breaking from our conventional programming in order to bring you Apichatpong Weerasethakul's Palme d'or winning masterpiece UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS LIVES.

It's left all of us who've seen in a state of awe, and we would like to share it with Austin audiences. This, our 70th screening, will be our first first-run film and the film's Austin premiere. Don't miss your opportunity to experience this magical film as it was meant to be seen.

It's that time of year again. If you have the time, we'd love to reclaim our 2008 title, "Best Imitation of Frenchie Cinephilia Circa 1968."

Stuffed ballots will be eliminated. Ballot stuffing is serious business. Did you know every year, competitive ballot getters are eliminated due to ballot stuffing? DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO BALLOT STUFF ON YOUR BEHALF. You could be taken out of the running for an award you otherwise might have won!

Movie Love in Madison

The Criterion Collection's blog focusing on the University of Wisconsin Cinematheque...

"Venues for repertory film programming in the United States generally fall into one of three categories: revival houses, museums, and university cinematheques. It seems like you hear the least about the latter, but college campus theaters are undoubtedly helping to keep cinephilia alive across the country."

We hope everyone is enjoying his or her summer. If you missed our screenings of CITY LIGHTS, BOB LE FLAMBEUR, PICKPOCKET, or VIVRE SA VIE, the Paramount is double dipping. Don't miss out twice!

thanks for a great semester everyone. however, a familiar face to cinematheque passed this morning, mlle. colette tazzi (from the antoine doinel series), marie france pisier. the link leads to her wonderful-and impossible to find-1966 collaboration with alain robbe-grillet (screenwriter of LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD) and jean-louis trintingant (THE CONFORMIST), TRANS-EUROP-EXPRESS (yes, it inspired the kraftwerk album).
