THEY KIDNAPPED THE ONLY WOMAN AND CHILD WHO COULD MAKE A MAFIA BOSS LOVE—AND HE SOON DISCOVERED THE TRAITOR WAS SITTING AT HIS OWN TABLE.
My name is Daniel Moretti.
For most of my life, I believed love was a weakness.
Then Emma and her four-year-old daughter Lily walked into my mansion.
Lily was fearless.
She called me “Mr. Grumpy,” stole food from my plate, and left crayon drawings on my desk.
I never understood why, but somehow, that little girl could make me smile.
Until the day she disappeared.
I arrived at Little Stars Preschool and found Emma's car abandoned outside.
The driver's door was open.
Glass covered the pavement.
And Lily's pink backpack lay in the middle of the street.
My security chief, Marcus, approached slowly.
“We lost them twelve minutes ago.”
I stared at the backpack.
“Find them.”
“We're trying.”
“No.”
I turned toward him.
“Find them before I do something this city will regret.”
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice said:
“Your family is with us.”
My blood went cold.
“You have twenty-four hours.”
“What do you want?”
“Your territory. Your warehouses. Your shipping routes.”
I almost laughed.
“You kidnapped a child for money?”
“No.”
The voice became colder.
“We kidnapped her because she's the only thing that can make Daniel Moretti afraid.”
The call ended.
Marcus looked at me.
“Boss…”
“Trace it.”
“We already did.”
He hesitated.
“It came from one of our private properties.”
I slowly turned toward him.
“Which one?”
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Your family compound.”
Silence filled the car.
Someone inside my organization had opened the door for them.
Someone knew exactly where Emma and Lily would be.
Someone knew which guards to remove.
Someone I trusted.
I walked into the compound twenty minutes later.
Every soldier stood silently.
Then I noticed something on the dining table.
A tiny pink hair clip.
Lily's.
Beside it was a photograph.
Emma was tied to a chair.
Lily was sitting beside her, crying.
On the back of the photograph, four words had been written:
COME ALONE, DANIEL.
Marcus reached for his weapon.
I stopped him.
“No.”
“Boss?”
I picked up the photograph.
“They want me alone.”
I looked around the room at the men who had served me for years.
“That's exactly what they'll get.”
I walked toward the door.
Marcus followed.
“Where are you going?”
“To find the traitor.”
Then my phone vibrated again.
Another message appeared.
You have ten minutes.
Underneath it was a second photograph.
This time, Lily was holding her mother's hand.
And behind them stood a man whose face I recognized immediately.
My oldest friend.
My most trusted lieutenant.
The man I'd once trusted with my life.
I stared at his photograph and felt every trace of warmth disappear from my chest.
He hadn't betrayed my business.
He had betrayed my family.
And by sunrise, New York would learn exactly what happens when someone touches the only two people a monster has ever loved.
