Blade of glory!

The neon sign, referred to as the blade, at the Historic KiMo Theatre is getting some TLC this week. The sign was resurrected in the summer of 2011 and has since illuminated the corner of 5th St. and Central Ave. on Route 66. Mind our mess as work trucks take over the sidewalk for the service.

City non-essential services and offices are now closed today due to inclement weather conditions. Essential personnel are required to contact their department director or other appropriate supervisor to determine their work schedule.

Heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures continue to make driving conditions extremely poor. Residents are encouraged to limit travel.

The Department of Municipal Development currently has 30 sanding and plowing trucks on the road to clear snow packed and icy roads.

The Solid Waste Department has cancelled residential and commercial trash and recycling pick up for today, meaning services will be delayed one day. The three SWD Convenience Centers will be closed to the public.

ABQ Ride has suspended service on routes 766 and 777 and is currently seeing delays on ABQ Ride fixed routes and Sun Van services.

For more information call 311.

Meet Ida B. Wells-Barnett!
She was a civil rights advocate, journalist, feminist and an active fighter for women’s suffrage, particularly for Black women. On January 30, 1913 Wells-Barnett founded the Alpha Suffrage Club in Chicago and played a crucial role in the victory of women’s suffrage in Illinois with the passage of the Illinois Equal Suffrage Act. The club organized women in the city to elect candidates who would best serve the Black community. As president of the club, Wells-Barnett was invited to march in the 1913 Suffrage Parade in Washington, DC. Organizers, afraid of offending Southern white suffragists, asked women of color to march at the back of the parade. She famously refused, instead, she stood on the parade sidelines until the Chicago contingent of white women passed, at which point she joined the march. She was also a founder of the National Association of Colored Women’s Club which was created to address issues dealing with civil rights and women’s suffrage.

Meet Sojourner Truth!
Born into slavery in 1797, Isabella Baumfree, who later changed her name to Sojourner Truth, would become one of the most powerful advocates for human rights in the nineteenth century. Sojourner Truth participated in the debates over which group should get suffrage first—black men or women. Known for her 1851 “Ain’t I A Woman?” speech, in 1867, the former slave and activist declared: “If colored men get their rights, and not colored women theirs, you see the colored men will be masters over the women, and it will be just as bad as it was before.” Having experienced unequal pay due to her gender, she became concerned with women’s economic prosperity.

KiMo Theatre

In the heart of Downtown Albuquerque stands a majestic and historic landmark unlike any other -- the KiMo Theatre.

About the KiMo

A Pueblo Deco picture palace, the KiMo opened Sept. 19, 1927. It was commissioned by the innovative Oresete Bachechi, who had envisioned a Southwestern style theater for Albuquerque.

Every detail of the theater contains historical significance, making it one the region's most valued cultural gems.
