This Thursday, FRAME with the Cuban filmmaker Joanna Vidal are glad to present Cuban Contemporary Shorts: Stories of Identity and Survival — a curated program exploring the intersections of personal experience and collective reality in contemporary Cuban cinema.

Built around the thematic axis ‘from the individual to the social body,’ this selection brings together a diverse range of short films that examine how identity is shaped through intimacy, relationships, and social conditions.

This Thursday FRAME is collaborating with .apac to bring a selection of short films hand-picked by curator . To commemorate Women’s Month, Cinemata presents HER FRAME: Women Filmmakers on Cinemata, a special program of short films by women filmmakers from Philippines and Malaysia. Across these films, women confront the expectations placed upon them: how they should behave, what they should want, and the roles they are expected to carry; revealing how women are often judged for being too different, too outspoken, too radical, or too liberated — yet also expected to endure, provide, and care for others.

HER FRAME brings these works together as a celebration of women filmmakers who claim their space in cinema, shaping stories through their own perspectives and lived experiences. The program also highlights films currently available on the Cinemata platform, offering a glimpse into the growing archive of Southeast Asian cinema and the voices shaping it today.

MY BUDDHA IS PUNK (2015, .hartmann.030 ) made our hearts and our house full.
Together with his family, more than a punk band — ; Ko raises awareness for the continuing violation of human rights in Myanmar.

The response from the audience was overwhelming with 2 simultaneous screenings held; followed by a virtual QnA with Ko Kyaw.

He spoke about the origins of the punk scene in Myanmar and shed light upon his band’s journey — inception all the way to touring internationally. From Hip Hop to B-Boying and then Buddhist philosophy, anarchy to punk. The cultural flow has been ever-evolving.

After Chiang Dao Punk Fest and a few gigs in Chiang Mai, The Rebel Riot is all set for a UK Tour. If you’re around, don’t miss them!

This Thursday at FRAME we have a screening of My Buddha is Punk (2015, Andreas Hartmann). Kyaw Kyaw, a 25-year-old Burmese Punk, obsessively pursues the dream of seeing the punk scene take off in Myanmar. Together with his punk band, he raises awareness about persistent violations of human rights. He travels across the country to promote his own philosophy among the young generations: A symbiosis of Buddhism and punk that rejects religious dictates and political doctrine.

FRAME presents another century old classic this Thursday. After the beautiful response for last year’s screening of Strike, this week we have a screening of Battleship Potemkin (1925) by Sergei Eisenstein on his death anniversary. A dramatized account of a great naval mutiny and a resultant public demonstration in the midst of the Russian Revolution of 1905, showing support, which brought on a police massacre.
