Opening remarks from Khun Luckana Kunavichayanont, former Director of Tadu and BACC:
“Our first home in 1996 was at RCA, which was back then a new, “to-watch” and “go-to” area in town. With the support of Khun Vithit Leenutaphong, the mastermind behind Tadu was Khun Wanit “Eddy” Mekdhanasarn who was tasked in making a conventional car dealership more interesting. A French fine-dining restaurant, “Private Cellar”, with a cigar bar and a wine cellar was added in addition to Tadu. The place, named “Pavilion Y”, was effectively a lifestyle centre way ahead of its time.
Tadu was aimed at promoting upcoming artistic talent and our first show – “Into The Next Decade” – seemingly marked a new decade in the Thai Contemporary Art Scene. I delightfully recall and express gratitude to Prof. Dr. Apinan Poshyananda who kindly helped us write the catalogue for that very first show of ours.
One year on in 1997, in spite of the Asian Financial Crisis, THAIYARNYON gave continuous support and to date, our premises has exhibited the works of over 300 artists. Initially concentrating on the visual arts, we later expanded to theatrical performances along with films, where we collaborated with numerous independent film partners and arts-related institutions. Khun Petch Osatanugrah who is here today has also been one of our main supporters through these years.
Tadu has moved from Pavilion Y at RCA to Thien Ruammit, then to Sukhumvit 87 and now, our fourth location, on Rama 9 Road. I would also like to thank Khun Apisak Sonjod who kept Tadu going and ran Tadu in my succession.
This evening, we will formally unveil “The Wanit Mekdhanasarn Chamber at Tadu” in memory of p Eddy and may I officially open tonight's inaugural exhibition, “Glories of Greyscale” as well as congratulate Khun Angkrit Achariyasophon and the artists.”
