The Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation (HKFGP) opens its fifth year with one of the most talked-about Hong Kong titles of 2026.

DOG DAY EVENING《一个部门的诞生》is an absurdist workplace comedy about a man who takes a customer service worker hostage over a cancelled cable subscription. What starts as a small complaint spirals rapidly into chaos.

It marks the feature directing debut of Mak Tin Shu, the two-time Hong Kong Film Award winner for Best Screenplay behind TRIVISA and DETECTIVE VS SLEUTHS.

Even better: Director Mak Tin Shu and actress Rachel Leung will both be in Singapore for opening night, with a Q&A after the screening. A rare chance to hear from the filmmakers themselves!

The Chen family, new arrivals from China, open a traditional-medicine clinic beside the Ng family’s Western one. Their polite smiles hide small frictions in language, customs and how they heal a patient. Everything shifts when the younger generation falls for one another, pushing both families to face their differences and clear a chain of mix-ups before love finally wins.

1,100 Taiwanese-language films were made between the 1950s and 1970s. Only around 200 still exist.

Five of the survivors have been restored, and this weekend they screen in Singapore, the first Asian stop on the programme’s world tour. Musicals, comedies, opera stars, all in Taiwanese Hokkien with Chinese and English subtitles.
