One of the best ways to know coffee is to know its history.

Qahua Sug refers to coffee from the Sulu region in the Philippines, particularly robusta coffee. "Qahua" means coffee in the Tausug language, spoken by the Tausug people in Sulu. This region has a rich coffee culture, closely tied to the Tausug's heritage and daily life

The Tausug coffee culture was known to have started as early as the mid-1800s, when robusta coffee beans were brought to Sulu by a Prussian seafarer named Herman Leopold Schuck. He became a blood brother of Sultan Jamalul Alam, then the ruler of the Sulu Sultanate. Deciding to stay in the Philippines, Schuck built a robusta coffee plantation with 20,000 plants. Soon after, many other locals cultivated the beans until the coffee was given the name “Kahawa/Qahua Sug,” Tausug for “coffee of Sulu".

For the Tausug people, coffee is more than just a beverage. It’s a social and cultural staple, often served during gatherings and community discussions. Coffee farming is passed down through generations, and robusta is favored for its strong, earthy flavor and high caffeine content.

The resilience of the Tausug people is reflected in the persistence of coffee cultivation, despite political and social challenges in the region. Today, robusta coffee from Sulu is gaining recognition for its distinct flavor, rooted in local culture and sustainable practices.
