While the bulk of Mr. Scorsese are the director’s own film-to-film recollections, a wealth of other personalities color in the portrait. That includes collaborators, like editor Thelma Schoonmaker, Paul Schrader, Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio and Day-Lewis. Power politics, patronage by appointments, using media to your advantage, dirty tricks and toying with the public’s perception, and even the ‘noble lie’ - we become witness to how the Commonwealth was the start of so many of the ills we still have to endure to this day, and how Quezon was a Master of the Game. The systemic corruption and failure of delivery, along with preying on the ignorance of the general public, are all depicted in this film. In a study titled “Habits and Preferences of Filipino Viewers of Local Films in Metro Manila Philippines,” conducted by De La Salle University and released by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) this year, watching movies in the theater was only the second choice. Should historical biopics, or biopics for that matter, always honor their subjects? Must filmmakers be mindful of the person’s reputation and take the family’s feelings into consideration? The answer is not so simple. Yet we believe that the filmmaker’s intention, creative compass and integrity should prevail over anything or anyone else.
