Davaa and Zaya are a young nomadic couple in the vast Bayanhongor region of Mongolia who are in the throes of animal birthing season when a seismic event suddenly changes their lives. They are forced to migrate afar but are haunted by their past lives.
The filming began only after Davaa and Zaya had already left the desert. Credited as co-writers, the couple returned to their homestead to re-create their former life, a process that must have been therapeutic and painful. This production detail adds another layer of melancholy to images of the livestock blissfully roaming on the plains, exquisitely rendered by the languorous cinematography. With climate change steadily climbing towards calamitous heights, there’s a real danger that these ways of life can only exist in fictional daydreams.

Heathers takes the teen comedy / coming-of-age genre and flips it on its head. with satire and black comedy. Balancing that fine line between social commentary and dark humor with the addition of copious quotable lines, Heathers will keep you engaged all while making you keep guessing what will happen next. If this doesn’t speak volumes about the film’s quality, then I don’t know what will. Presenting its heavy subject matter through the lens of a teen black comedy, Heathers continues to be a beloved staple in the black comedy subgenre, whilst being gradually embraced by mainstream film fans.

The Gecko is proud to bring you this first installment from NO MAN'S LAND FESTIVAL, as we share the vision of this organisation which stands for inclusivity and equality on all levels and promote the dismantling of the s*xist, white-supremacist, ciss*xist, ableist, and other settler-colonial norms that cause harm to non-archetypal representation.

We have two new films starting this week: “GLENROTHAN”, starring Alan Cu***ng and Brian Cox who play two brothers reuniting to determine the fate of their family whiskey distillery, and “RE-CREATION”, from legendary Irish director, Jim Sheridan, (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father), this part courtroom drama, part true crime documentary delves into one of Ireland’s most shocking unsolved crimes.

We continue our season of fascinating documentary “MISTRESS DISPELLER”, which follows a woman in China who hires a professional to go undercover and break up her husband's affair.

We finish our season of drama / thriller “WORDS OF WAR” following world-renowned journalist and human rights activist Anna Politkovskaya who went from being a local print journalist to braving the Chechen killing fields and exposing Russian state corruption, as well as dramatised true story “MOSS AND FREUD”, which follows supermodel Kate Moss and painter, Lucian Freud, who formed an unlikely friendship when he painted her portrait in 2002.

On 26th of June at 7pm we will screen “NO MAN’S LAND FESTIVAL – CONSERVATION PROGRAMME” which is made up of a powerful collection of short films that celebrates the people protecting wild places, challenging barriers, and finding hope in the face of climate change. Expect breathtaking landscapes, bold voices, and stories that will move and motivate you.

And from 25th of June to 08th of July we will host our first “GEN-X FILM FESTIVAL”, a selection of films made from 1985 to 1999, that defined that generation as well as movies made by young members of it. You can see the full selection at the bottom of this message including screening days.

This film is Ian Mune's second feature and the only New Zealand film in our GEN X Film Fest. It is widely praised for making excellent use of its mid-1980s atmosphere and the lush, breathtaking wilderness of the actual Bridge to Nowhere location. Actor Bruno Lawrence is also frequently highlighted as a steady, anchoring presence in the role of the vengeful rancher.

Pedro Almodovar's 1986 "MATADOR " is a funny, intriguing meditation on s*x and violence, delving sacrilegiosuly into the underpinnings of that arch Spanish ritual, the bullfight. This one is the only foreign language film in our GEN X Festival and will delight viewers who like intense, provocative psychological thrillers with erotic and transgressive themes, all delivered with bold colors, operatic emotion and dark humor, typical of early works from this master filmaker. It screens 01 July at 6:30 and 05 July at 4:30.

This Spanish erotic thriller directed by Pedro Almodóvar follows Diego, a retired bullfighter who finds s*xual arousal in murder, and María, a lawyer who mirrors his actions, alongside a repressed student, Ángel (Antonio Banderas), who confesses to crimes he did not commit.

"Glenrothan" is a 2025 British comedy-drama film directed by Brian Cox in his feature directorial debut. Described as a "love letter to Scotland", it stars Cox and Alan Cu***ng.
"Glenrothan" centres on two estranged brothers, Sandy and Donal. Following a heated confrontation with their father on the day of their mother's funeral, Donal departs their Highland home for the United States. After 35 years abroad, Donal reluctantly returns to the Scotland to reconcile with Sandy.
GLENROTHAN starts on 18th of June.
