This Friday 13th March @7.30

Funny Cow
(2017) is a British comedy-drama starring Maxine Peake as an unnamed female comedian navigating the male-dominated, often hostile, Northern England working men’s club circuit in the 1970s and 80s. The film highlights her rise to success while dealing with a traumatic, abusive past.

For much of the 20th century, Friday night meant a trip to the local picture theatre. Before television and streaming, cinemas and town halls were at the heart of community life - drawing families, couples, and young people into town for the weekly screening.

With newsreels, cartoons, and feature films, Friday night flicks were as much a social occasion as entertainment. A shared experience remembered fondly by generations of New Zealanders.

And Matamata had its very own purpose-built cinema! The Regent Theatre, opened in the 1930s and closed in 1988, was a Broadway landmark in its day. This wonderful photo from Historical Images of Matamata shows the theatre in its 1940s heyday - and while the popcorn machines may be gone, the building still stands proudly on Broadway today.

Happily, the tradition lives on. Matamata Little Theatre continues the Friday night film ritual with a movie once a month. Coming up on 20 February is Love in the Time of Cholera - proof that some Friday night traditions never really go out of style
