The Regent Theatre was built in 1918 on the site of the original Bank of NSW and is registered by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust Board as a category two building in recognition of its historical and cultural heritage significance. The Regent was New Zealand's only provincial theatre from the World War I era to have remained open continuously, apart from short periods for repair and refurbishment, and showed movies until it closed in 2011.

It’s 1978, and the Ropata family’s world is turned upside down. When their local school faces closure, the youngest son and his mates take matters into their own hands, cooking up one crazy scheme after another as they take on the city kids at regional sports day!

But there’s more at stake than just winning. As one of the most turbulent years in New Zealand’s history unfolds, the family is divided when one of the older sons joins the fight for Māori land rights at Bastion Point.

Packed with adventure, humour, family, friendship and plenty of Kiwi spirit, 1978 is a film for the whole family — with plenty of laughs, plenty of heart, and a story rooted in an important part of our history. ❤
