The Regent Theatre was built in 1918 on the site of the original Bank of NSW and is registered by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust Board as a category two building in recognition of its historical and cultural heritage significance. The Regent was New Zealand's only provincial theatre from the World War I era to have remained open continuously, apart from short periods for repair and refurbishment, and showed movies until it closed in 2011.

UPDATE @ 10am Thursday 16th

🎬 Important Update from the Dannevirke Regent Cinema 🎬

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen technical issues with our projector, we need to cancel all screenings scheduled for Thursday and Friday this week.
We are planning to be all running again by Saturday. As a note, we have added an extra Toy Story 5 screening this Sunday at 10am.

As a small, community-run cinema, sometimes unexpected equipment issues arise that are simply beyond our control. The good news is that our amazing team is already working frantically behind the scenes alongside our technical support to diagnose and resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

We know many of you were looking forward to your school holiday visit or movie night, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience. Your patience, understanding, and continued support mean the world to us and help keep this historic cinema running for our community.

We will provide further updates as soon as we have more information regarding Friday and Saturday screenings. Please keep an eye on our page for the latest news.

What a fantastic afternoon we had on Tuesday. Our Cinema Promotions team had the opportunity to meet the wonderful Kate Rodger and her brilliant cameraman, Billy, as part of their Great Indie Cinema Roadtrip. 🎬

From the moment they arrived, Kate’s warmth, genuine interest, and incredible knowledge of the film industry put us all at ease. She gave our team the opportunity to share the story of our much-loved community cinema and what makes this place so special.

Billy certainly seemed impressed by our beautiful old building and sounded keen to join us at our next working bee! 😄

A huge thank you to Kate and Billy for taking the time to visit us. We can’t wait to see where this journey leads.

For now, all we can say is… watch this space! ✨

🎬 Week Two of the School Holidays is here! 🍿

What an incredible start to the holidays! More than 500 people have visited the Dannevirke Regent Cinema over the first week, and we’re so grateful for the amazing support our community continues to show. Thank you for choosing to spend your holidays with us!

This week we’re screening 4 fantastic films, including the premiere of Christopher Nolan’s epic new film, The Odyssey. There’s certainly been plenty of discussion about it online, but we always believe the best review is your own. Come along, experience it on the big screen, and decide for yourself!

A friendly reminder to arrive early, as sessions have been very popular. Our doors open 45 minutes before every screening for our Kids films, giving you plenty of time to grab your favourite treats from the Nibble Nook, find your seats, and settle in before the movie begins.

We can’t wait to welcome you back for another fantastic week at the movies. See you at the Regent!

✨ What a beautiful way to celebrate Matariki together. ✨

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to the more than 90 people who came along to our Moana Family Fun Day this afternoon.
Walking into a cinema full of smiling faces, hearing children laughing, and seeing families enjoying time together is something that never gets old. These are the moments that remind us why we volunteer and why we are so passionate about keeping our community cinema alive.

Matariki is a time to come together, reflect, celebrate, and look forward with hope. It is about cherishing the people around us and creating memories that will last long after the credits roll. We hope today’s event and the new live-action Moana brought a little extra joy to your school holidays and gave families the opportunity to spend quality time together.

Our cinema has always been about more than just movies. It belongs to our community, and every event we hold is only possible because of the incredible support we receive from people like you. Every ticket purchased, every visit, and every treat from the Nibble Nook helps ensure this special place continues to thrive for future generations.

So today, we’d like to say thank you. Thank you for believing in your community cinema, for supporting a team of dedicated volunteers, and for helping us continue to create experiences that bring people together. In the true spirit of Matariki, we are incredibly grateful to share this journey with you all.
