Colonialism, misogyny, and conformity in 1950s New Zealand, Josephine Stewart-Te Whiuā€™s electric debut is a rallying cry for girls to stick together across the various divides that people use to disempower them.

Three teens are interned at Te Motu School for Incorrigible and Delinquent Girls where their life becomes a strict regime of lessons in etiquette and obedience under the rule of a devout matron. Layered underneath this, we also examine the impacts of colonisation on young women and our indigenous Aotearoa New Zealand communities.

With the groundbreaking MAURI (1988), Merata Mita became the first Māori woman to direct a dramatic feature alone. Along with Ngāti the previous year, Mauri played a key role in the rise of Māori cinema.

Set in the late 1950s in a dwindling, isolated East Coast settlement named Te Mata, the story follows Rewi (played by Anzac Wallace), a man haunted by past mistakes and a hidden identity who seeks refuge in a tight-knit Māori community.

The Mātaki Mai Film Festival kicks off with Opening Night and screening of RANGINUI:CALL OF THE ICE.

This award-winning New Zealand documentary follows Māori astronomer Professor Rangi Matamua and te reo expert Mataia Keepa during a winter expedition to Antarctica, where science and Indigenous knowledge meet.

This screening is followed by a Q&A with Miriama Kamo and Julia Sartorio and includes a beverage and nibbles on arrival.
