Stop Strip Searching | de Appel | 17th of May

Derry Film and Video Workshop’s (DFVW) film Stop Strip Searching documents the intensive use of strip-searching of women political prisoners in the north of Ireland in the early 1980s. Including interviews with ex-prisoners, legal experts, activists, psychologists and the family members of prisoners inside at the time, the film was used as a campaigning tool and toured widely in Ireland and beyond. The issue of strip-searching exposed a fracture within the nascent women’s movement in Ireland, between those who wanted to address this form of state violence against women, and those who feared the political alignment with Irish republicanism that support of the campaign might suggest. Directed by Anne Crilly, it was the first film made by the newly founded collective.

Derry Film and Video Workshop (1984-1990) was a women-led film collective in Derry, in the north of Ireland. In the late 2010s, collecting, preserving, and re-centering the remarkable history and archive of the Derry Film and Video workshop (DFVW) was taken up by curators-artists Sara Greavu and Ciara Phillips, resulting in the exhibition project "We realised the power of it - Derry Film and Video Workshop". An iteration of this project is currently on view at the exhibition state of us at de Appel, made in collaboration with EVA International - Ireland’s Biennial of Contemporary Art, which features a chapter foregrounding the campaign against the strip-searching of women political prisoners in the north of Ireland, including rushes made for the DFVW’ film Stop Strip Searching.

After the screening follows a conversation with Anne Crilly and Sara Greavu.

de Appel is an exhibition space, a curatorial and pedagogical lab, and an arts library and archive that was founded in 1975.

Double Screening: Les Femmes Palestinienne + Leila and the Wolves | Nabka Remembrance Day | 15th of May

Nakba Day is the day of commemoration for the Nakba, also known as the Palestinian Catastrophe, which comprised the destruction of Palestinian society and homeland in 1948, and the permanent displacement of a majority of the Palestinian people.

For this day, we are screening two remarkable films that bring Palestinian and Arab women’s stories to the center.

Every ticket sold goes to the Palestine Red Crescent Society, whose teams are doing vital humanitarian work right now.

Les Femmes Palestiniennes | Jocelyne Saab |1973

Rarely seen, this documentary was censored before it could ever air - because Jocelyne Saab chose to let Palestinian women speak for themselves: as fighters, as survivors, as people whose lives and voices the mainstream had chosen to ignore. More than fifty years later, the film is urgent as ever.

Leila and the Wolves | Heiny Srour | 1984

This short film is part archive and part fairytale, inspired by Arab oral storytelling traditions and mosaic-like narrative structures. Heiny Srour's Leila and the Wolves moves through time and form to uncover what official history has buried: the presence and courage of Arab women in Lebanon and Palestine's political struggles throughout the twentieth century.

TranScreen Film Festival 2026 | 16 & 17 May 2026

Join us again this year for a celebration of trans and gender-diverse stories through films, conversations, workshops, and food! TranScreen creates space for authentic stories made by and about trans and gender-diverse people, cultivating visibility and community through cinema.

This year’s program brings together documentaries, experimental cinema, punk resistance, intimate portraits, and joyful coming-of-age stories from around the world.

The program includes:

> State of Firsts: following Sarah McBride during her historic campaign as the first openly transgender member of the U.S. Congress

> Q***r as Punk: a documentary about q***r resistance through music in Malaysia, accompanied by a video message from the director

> P**n Shorts curated by P**no Film Festival Amsterdam

> S/he Is Still Here: a personal tribute to Genesis P-Orridge

> Niñxs: An intimate coming-of-age portrait of Karla growing up as a trans girl in rural Mexico

> Several screenings will feature introductions and post-film discussions.

22 and 23 May in Kriterion: Symbols of Ukraine

This program is curated by Anna, a Ukrainian worker at Kriterion.

Symbols of Ukraine is an invitation to the Ukrainian diaspora and the people of Amsterdam to come together and celebrate the richness of Ukrainian culture. At the heart of the programme lies Ukrainian Poetic Cinema: a film movement that emerged during the Soviet era as cultural resistance, celebrating Ukrainian language, folklore, ritual, and identity in the face of erasure.

Many of these works were censored or banned under Soviet rule, only resurfacing decades later. To revisit them today is to do much more than honour an extraordinary cinematic tradition; it is to reclaim a cultural heritage that remains as necessary as ever!

Alongside the screenings, join us on May 23rd for traditional Ukrainian dishes in the café and a Ukrainian book market curated by Nomadische Boekenplank.

Part of the ticket revenue will be donated to Superhumans Center, a Ukrainian initiative supporting people affected by the war through rehabilitation and prosthetics, as well as psychological care.

Tommy | After Midnight | Every Saturday at Midnight in May!
The night movie niche was originally intended for B-movie fans with an insatiable appetite for campy characters in occult or other extraordinary situations. Unfortunately, over the last few years, the films seem to have been permanently buried in budget DVD bins. Kriterion brings the cult back to the depths of the night. Where it belongs, AFTER MIDNIGHT!

After a series of traumatic childhood events, the psychosomatically deaf and blind boy Tommy becomes a master pinball player and the object of a religious cult. But things start to get out of hand...

Tommy is a 1975 musical film based on the rock opera Tommy, which was released in 1969 by the British rock band The Who. The film features an iconic cast of characters, such as the singer Tina Turner as the Acid Queen. Ann-Margret received a Golden Globe Award for her role and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress. Pete Townshend, the songwriter/guitarist of The Who and also the writer of the rock opera, was nominated for an Oscar for his contribution to the music of the film. Directed by Ken Russell (The Devils, 1971 and Altered States, 1980)

Neon Solitude | Moderne Klassieker | Mei

De Moderne Klassiekers van mei staan in het teken van de Neon Solitude of Neon Eenzaamheid. Het is weer volop lente en met dat warme weer trekken de mensen weer de overvolle stad in. Voor ons als Amsterdammers is dat elke lente weer een stad die we minder herkennen, die minder voor ons lijkt te zijn gemaakt. Wij bewegen ons door een stad die enkel nog één functie voor ons heeft, bewegen van huis naar werk en van werk naar huis in een eindeloze stroom aan recreatieve consumenten. Dat gevoel van proberen te bestaan als individu in deze grote onmenselijke mensenstromen, verlicht met neon reclameborden, in een stad die enkel nog lijkt te bestaan voor die grote zielloze massa om zich doorheen te bewegen, maar ook tegen die stroom in proberen te bewegen, de vervreemding en de eenzaamheid die daarbij komt kijken, dat gevoel wordt deze maand geprojecteerd op ons doek in "Neon Solitude".

Op 4 mei openen we het programma met en gratis lezing over De Kriterion Meisjes: Otti Lim (15:00-16:00, K2), waarin Anna Eva Boogaard en Marian Zanen, dochter van Otti Lim, haar verhaal vertellen en haar verzetsverleden en leven na de oorlog centraal stellen.��

’s Avonds volgt een herdenkingsritueel door Oy Vey (19:30-20:10, Café), waarin ruimte is voor bezinning en collectief stilstaan.

��De dag wordt afgesloten met een vertoning van Bedrock (20:30, K3), een documentaire over leven op plekken waar de Holocaust plaatsvond en hoe dit doorwerkt in het heden.��

> 5 mei:

��Op Bevrijdingsdag richten we ons op de nasleep van de oorlog en de betekenis van vrijheid vandaag.��

We vertonen om 17:00 in K2 Nederlandse Joden na de Bevrijding, met een inleiding door Michal Citroen. Daarna volgt Camp de Thiaroye (19:00, K2), ingeleid door Chris de Ploeg.��

Daarnaast is er van 18:00 tot 21:00 gratis vegan Vrijheidssoep voor buurtbewoners en geïnteresseerden om samen te eten, en live geïmproviseerde jazzsessie, met een percussionist, bassist en saxofonist, in het café, om de dag feestelijk af te sluiten.

Derek vs. Derek | Movies That Matter | 29th April

In the idyllic English countryside lives an intensive dairy farmer named Derek. One day, his neighbor, also named Derek, makes a radical break with farming traditions. He begins to return his land to wild nature. How does the community react when one of them turns their back on their way of life?

We’re joined by Cansu Koça (junior lecturer specialised in environmental law and private law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Amsterdam), who will help unpack the legal and ethical dimensions of environmental change, including the question of rights for non-human life.

Lepel | Kinderklassieker | 29th of April

Deze kinderfilm gaat over een jongetje genaamd Lepel. Lepel is zijn vader en moeder op bizarre wijze kwijtgeraakt - ze zijn in een luchtballon gestapt om de wereld rond te reizen, om vervolgens nooit meer terug te komen. Daarom wordt Lepel door zijn oma opgevoed, voor wie hij knopen - die hij voor haar steelt uit een groot warenhuis - moet sorteren en tellen. Zijn oma behandelt hem als een mannelijke assepoester. Lepel weet aan zijn treurige leven te ontsnappen dankzij Pleun, een meisje dat in het warenhuis stiekem achter een stapel truien woont. Samen met Pleun verbergt hij zich in de winkel, en maken ze veel avonturen mee.

Lepel gaat over grote angsten en grote avonturen, en over familie, die niet altijd door bloed bepaald wordt.
