🕊️ September 16 marks exactly one year that Mahsa Amimi was brutally killed by Iran's morality police. The accusation: she wore her headscarf incorrectly. Worldwide protests followed.

🌎 Last August, @‌worldcinemaamsterdam paid tribute to the women in Iran, with the theme program 'Strong & Unwavering: Women of Iran'. The gripping documentary SEVEN WINTERS IN TEHRAN was part of this program. The story of student Reyhaneh, who stabbed a man in self-defense with major consequences, made a deep impression and won the audience award.

🎞️ Good news for those who missed Amir Toodehroosta's drama NUMB (from our ‘Women of Iran’ program), or those who want to watch this gem again. As of today, NUMB is hitting the Dutch cinemas, among which both Rialto venues.

👁️ NUMB tells a sensitive story in which a child's innocence clashes with the raw reality of adults. Told through the eyes of the children, it becomes clear that everything revolves around the contrast between freedom and suffocating state control.

🎉 We're looking back at an amazing, inspiring & festive edition of World Cinema Amsterdam. Last Saturday we ended the festival with the award ceremony, closing film INSHALLAH A BOY and a party at Rialto De Pijp.

❤️ Thank you to all of the filmmakers for delivering such impressive pieces of art, our dedicated crew and of course all the guests who contributed to this year's success. See you all next year!

🏆 The WCA Audience Award goes to... SEVEN WINTERS IN TEHRAN!

🎞️ Congrats to director Steffi Niederzoll, on making this gripping, urgent and important film that made an indelible impression on this year's audience. Using secretly recorded testimonies and letters, it tells the shocking story of 19-year-old architecture student Reyhaneh Jabbari.

❤️ A special thank you to Reyhaneh's sister - Shahrzad - who was also present in Amsterdam for WCA. It was your presence and bravery that made these sceenings unforgettable and inspiring.

🏆 And the winners are…

🕊️ Congrats to Apolline Traoré on winning the Exhange Award - the award for the most thought-provoking film of the festival - for her film SIRA. SIRA tells the story of a young Fulani nomad named Sira, who plots revenge after being attacked by terrorists.

🕊️ Milad Alami was awarded the Jury award, for his exceptional feature film OPPONENT - a story about Iranian Iman, who flees to Sweden to build a new life there. This doesn’t turn out to be easy.

🎉 Tonight we’ll celebrate the work of the Dutch-Iranian upcoming filmmaker Sam Yazdanpanna, with the screenings of three of his shorts and a Q&A afterwards, with him and his cast and crew.

🎞️ Sam: "I tell stories by using different perspectives. Working with fragments is my way of creating these perspectives. My theme is the transformation of identity. I am fascinated by the challenge to represent this event. It can happen so fast. Think of that split second when you are about to fall: before you perceive any physical effect, you notice that you lost your balance. You lose control and you don’t know what the next moment will bring."

🏫 LA RIOT is Rialto's youth platform that regurarly organises special film screenings in either Rialto De Pijp & Rialto VU.

📽️ Tonight, 19:00h at Rialto VU, at the heart of the VU University campus, they will host a special screening of BITTERSWEET RAIN, by Brazilian director Haroldo Borges. He will be joining the members of LA RIOT for a Q&A after the screening.

🌧️ BITTERSWEET RAIN tells the story of a teenager, who slowly becomes blind, that deals with multiple setbacks in life.

🗣️ Today, 17:00h, De Balie will host a panel discussion on this topic, in which illustrator Sara Emami, artist Atousa Bandeh Ghiasabadi and filmmaker Nafiss Nia talk about revolt, art and feminism.

🇮🇷 Yesterday we opened our program ‘Strong & Unwavering: Women of Iran’ with Steffi Niederzolls gripping documentary SEVEN WINTERS OF TEHRAN, about the 19-year-old student Reyhaneh who stabs a man in self defense, with dire consequences.

🗣️ After the screening, Steffi took the stage together with Reyhaneh's sister, Shahrzad. A touching and impressive moment for everyone present. Both will be present for another Q&A on Saturday, 19:00 at De Balie.
