We’re proud to present the brand-new trailer for our re-release of Bernardo Bertolucci’s searing indictment of fascism, complicity and the terrifying effects of political conformity, Il Conformista. One of the most visually astonishing films ever made, this hypnotic psychological thriller follows a repressed bureaucrat, chillingly portrayed by Jean-Louis Trintignant, who becomes ensnared in the fascist machinery of 1930s Italy and is tasked with murdering his former professor. With Vittorio Storaro’s masterful cinematography (Apocalypse Now) and Bertolucci’s elegant, expressionistic direction, Il Conformista is a dazzling study in style and subtext, probing themes of power, repression, and the seductive pull of conformity. The film has inspired generations of filmmakers, from Coppola to Scorsese, and remains a defining icon of European film history. Experience the political urgency and visual splendor of this classic starting March 19th, now fully restored in 4K by the Cineteca di Bologna. Trailer by .azman. 🇮🇹

Hungarian auteur Béla Tarr, a towering figure in contemplative cinema whose long takes and bleak black-and-white epics reshaped the art form, has died at the age of 70. 🕊️

Tarr emerged from grassroots beginnings in Hungary in the late 1970s to international prominence with films like Damnation, his breakthrough in 1988, and Sátántangó, a hypnotic seven-hour exploration of dissolution and despair that has been enshrined as one of the great achievements of world cinema.

His unique cinematic language of extended single shots, minimal editing and meditative pacing distilled a somber, reflective vision of human existence that influenced generations of filmmakers and helped define the slow cinema movement.

Working closely with novelist László Krasznahorkai, Tarr made films such as Werckmeister Harmóniák (now screening as part of LAB Suggestions and The Turin Horse, his prize-winning final feature.
He leaves behind a body of work that forever stretched cinema’s sense of time, patience, and moral gravity. 🇭🇺
