🎬 BIFFL Presents… Wicker
What if you could weave yourself the perfect husband? 🧶❤️
📅 Tuesday, 13 October 2026
🕡 18:30
📍 Ciné Utopia
In a rigid seaside village, an unmarried fisherwoman is tired of being isolated, ridiculed and judged by her neighbours.
So she takes matters into her own hands — commissioning a local craftsman to weave her a sentient husband out of wicker.
When her charmingly crafted companion unexpectedly comes to life, he proves to be everything she could have hoped for. But the arrival of this extraordinary new partner soon sparks jealousy, gossip and social chaos throughout the village.
A quirky and imaginative story about loneliness, love, conformity and the courage to create your own life.

🎬 And that’s a wrap! 🎬
The 17th British & Irish Film Festival Luxembourg Autumn Edition came to a close last night at Ciné Utopia – and what a week it has been! ❤️
After nine days, 11 feature films, six short films and four documentaries, we finished with Finding Emily – but not before our closing speeches, awards and a lovely reception hosted by the British Embassy in Luxembourg.
It was a chance to pause and reflect on what makes BIFFL so special. We’ve had sold-out screenings and packed rooms, wonderful Q&As, new filmmakers, returning audiences and films that have made us laugh, think, and sometimes look at the world a little differently.
And there were some very deserving awards:
🏆 Critics’ Award: The Siege of Paradise – Gar O’Rourke
🏆 Audience Award:
🥇 Trad
🥈 500 Miles
🥉 Pressure
🎁 Audience Prize: Patricia Angoy and Bernard Biggar – congratulations!
It was particularly lovely to celebrate the Young Filmmakers Competition too – launching the 4th edition and seeing the work of last year’s winners, Theo Fedorov and William Murray, on the big screen with their 10-minute documentary Galway: A City That Shaped Ireland. It was wonderful to see where their filmmaking journey has taken them in just a few months.
A huge thank you to everyone who has helped make this edition happen – our special guests Lance Daly, Megan McGinley and Billy McGrath, our funders, partners and Community Partners, the British and Irish Embassies, our wonderful volunteers and, of course, our audiences.
There’s already talk of BIFFL 2027, with the Spring Edition planned for 18–24 March 2027. So although this edition is now officially wrapped, there’s no stopping us for long!
And one more film before we really put our feet up… 🍿

Thank you for being part of BIFFL 2026. It has been a joy. ❤️

🎬 And they’re off! The BIFFL Young Filmmakers Competition 2026–27 is launched! 🎬
A lovely moment during our SHORTS Evening this week as we launched the 4th edition of the BIFFL Young Filmmakers Competition – and opened the door for the next generation of filmmakers to get creative.
We’re delighted to be able to run the competition again with the support of the Œuvre Nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte. ❤️
Over the past three editions, we’ve already seen some fantastic young filmmaking talent emerge from Luxembourg – and last night we had the chance to see one of our previous winning films back on the big screen.
So now it’s over to the next generation! 🎥
This year’s young filmmakers can explore Health or Friendship, through Drama, Documentary or Animation. Films should be 2–5 minutes long, and submissions are open to school and university students.
📅 Submissions open: 1 December 2026
📅 Deadline: 31 January 2027
And no, you don’t need to make a film about Britain or Ireland! 🇬🇧🇮🇪 The film simply needs to be in English or have English subtitles (unless there is no dialogue).
We’re looking forward to seeing what you come up with! 🎬✨

🎬 BIFFL Presents… Midwinter Break
A journey to Amsterdam becomes an unexpected journey into a marriage, memory and the questions we ask about our lives.
📅 Saturday, 26 September 2026
🕖 19:00
📍 Cinémathèque @ Cercle Cité
A longtime couple travel to Amsterdam for what should be a short break — but the trip becomes a moment of reckoning.
With exceptional performances from Lesley Manville and Ciarán Hinds, Midwinter Break offers an honest and deeply human portrait of two people whose marriage has become increasingly distant and unfulfilled.
Against the backdrop of Amsterdam, the film explores love, disappointment, spirituality and the complexities of long-term relationships, asking difficult questions about what happens when the life we have built is no longer the life we imagined.
A thoughtful and moving film about relationships, ageing, choices and the possibility of change.
