Rut Villamagna Scenic Painter Spanish Scenic Painter in London. I´ve worked for Directors like , , & . Not a job but an experience. Abrams.

With fifteen years experience as Scenic Painter I have worked for Directors like Wes Anderson, Tim Burton, Guillermo Del Toro and J.J. In 2006, I was part of the art department team working on Pan's Labyrinth, which won the Oscar for best Art Direction a year later. In 2011 I relocated to the UK, based in London. My professional highlight is the new Star Wars Saga as part of the prop painting team

(leading on The Force Awaken and scenic prop painting on Rogue One). There are other great ones like Miss Peregrine Home for Peculiar Children, War of Warcraft, Frankenweenweenie, Muppets the most wanted, Maleficent, Thor the Dark World, The Grand Hotel Budapest, Guardians of the Galaxy, Exodus… plus several collaborations in commercials. It is not a job but an experience. Every project is a challenge. And every challenge makes me a better painter in props, sets, creatures and puppets using different techniques and tools: spray guns, airbrushes, hopper gun or specific brushes for each job. If you like what you see and you think I could add value to an upcoming project I'd be delighted to hear from you. Any queries, please feel free to get in contact.

This isn't metal. It's paint.

Chrome is one of the hardest finishes to nail because you're not painting a colour, you're painting a mirror. Swipe through to see how to do it.
💫Want to learn more? Check the link in my bio and go for the chrome painting course; it's quite good, super competitive and up to date.
🤷🏽 or you can wait until we work together one day and I'll teach you how to chrome for free 😂😂😂

Director Christopher Miller recently shared this amazing (fully practical) finger movement test carried out by Neal Scanlan's animatronics department.
💫In the background you can see the first successful approach to Rocky's final paint design. I painted this maquette after many rounds of tests, each one either approved or rejected by the directors, which gradually gave me a clearer picture of what they were looking for.
🪨 I'm very proud of this maquette paintjob, It was the first successful painting approach, but it would go through many more changes over the following weeks.
👎🏼Finding Rocky's paint was a very interesting and challenging journey.
HOD Neal Scanlan

A sculpture is just the beginning. The real challenge is making it feel like it could breathe, move, and exist in the real world.
Don't remember who designed that, it was moulded by incredible and team.
The real challenge is making it feel like it could breathe, move, and exist in the real world.
Every layer adds something new: texture, contrast, character. What starts as a resin sculpture slowly becomes something far more believable.

Practical effects and ARTS in the film industry are more than nostalgia, they’re craftsmanship, problem solving, and real artists creating something tangible in front of the camera. 🎬✨

In a world increasingly dominated by CGI, practical effects still bring weight, texture, imperfections and humanity that audiences can feel, even if they don’t realize it.

The magic has never been about practical or digital. The best cinema happens when both work together.

Behind every creature, prop, costume, set or miniature, there are sculptors, painters, fabricators, puppeteers and technicians pouring years of knowledge into every detail.

Keeping practical effects alive means keeping those crafts alive too. And that matters.

And one more thing: never feel embarrassed to talk about your craft.
Sharing your work matters. Showing the process matters. Keeping these skills visible matters.

Because the more people understand and appreciate these crafts, the less chance they have of disappearing.

London 2016, Natural History Museum, wrap party for episode 8, The Last Jedi. Mark Hamill had just arrived and there was a long queue of people waiting to get a photo with him. I was watching from a distance when he looked at me, I smiled, and he waved me over. I walked up as everyone in the queue gave me the death stare (well deserved). He put his arm around me and said something I completely couldn't catch but I smile anyway. And then Victor took this beautiful photo. May the 4th be with you!
