Cinestef is proud to present Films in Context hosted by ArtHouse Jersey at Greve de Lecq Barracks this autumn.

Until a more permanent arthouse cinema venue is established on Island, Films in Context promises an excellent opportunity to revisit or finally see on a large screen some world cinema classics from the past fifty years, films that have shaped cinema history, and to learn more about what makes these works so extraordinary curated and compered by local cinephile Stefan Rousseau.

The concept is to show films that have both a cultural and artistic depth but also commercial appeal to cult status. First, to introduce you to them in context, i.e. giving some information on the director, this particular film, and reading perspectives to watch the movie through a different lens.

And then once the movie showing is over, the plan is to have a conversation about the film itself compered by Stefan Rousseau, so that we can all enjoy different perspectives and refined appreciation for a movie we all know well or just discovered and reignite the passion for Cinema as in the times of the Cine-Clubs.

The Conformist 1970 Bernardo Bertolucci – Italy – 15 Rating

Summary: A weak-willed Italian man becomes a fascist flunky who goes abroad to arrange the assassination of his old teacher, now a political dissident.

One, if not the most beautiful movie ever shot, (by Vittorio Storaro : 1900, Apocalypse Now, The Last Emperor) coupled with an incredibly complex and astute portrait of daily servitude and the moral and intellectual pits of conformism when set as a principle by a country’s government but also its society.

Style and Depth are used to the highest level of artistry and professionalism to create a unique perspective on the rise of fascism through absolute conformism, the banality of evil described, and theorise by Anna Ahrendt.

Jean Louis Trintignant is absolutely impeccable in one of the great ambiguous performances of the history of Cinema.
