"The origin is always in the gesture that dies every night and is never repeated the same way twice. Theatre is the other place where the dead can be found, where the living can live side by side with those who no longer exist. [...] I have always believed that a story performed onstage should bear some relation to revolution. For me, theatre-making is a way of rebelling against the system, writing a new set of rules. It's an alternative approach to life." Emma Dante

What traces does time leave upon bodies, sounds, and images?
As part of the three-day presentation of the new premises of the International Centre for Research on Contemporary Arts at the Arsenale (1 > 3 June 2026), artists Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons and Kamaal Malak present WATERMARKS: a performance where spoken word, electric bass, movement, and image-making converge to explore how we perceive ourselves within the flow of time, as dreams begin to take shape in space.

Between Monday 1 and Tuesday 2 June, this journey will lead us across a liminal passage where what we preserve from the past meets what we imagine for the future – through resonant sounds and shared gestures that linger like marks upon water.

Free admission upon reservation.

"In this performance, cries of exile or displacement are not illustrated; they are activated. By avoiding linear storytelling and psychological characterisation, CRIES resists turning otherness into an object. Instead, it invites spectators to listen, to feel, to endure, to experience." "Telling a story with music is one of the oldest forms of theatre, found in all cultures. In Rwanda, it is the form of the epic poet who recounts family and popular sagas while accompanying himself on his zither; it is the same configuration found among the griots of West Africa; and further afield, one could say that it is the form in which Homer's epics were told, with aoidoi playing the lyre. We found ourselves at the sources whose language is universal for all audiences." Dorcy Rugamba

How can an archive become living matter? And what happens when choreographic gesture meets machine learning?
From 1 to 3 June 2026, as the new premises of the International Centre for Research on Contemporary Arts opens at the Arsenale, the Artistic Director Wayne McGregor presents BODY AS ARCHIVE – a performance-installation where sixteen young dancers from the collaborate with AISOMA, an interactive machine learning-powered choreographic tool developed by McGregor and Google Arts & Culture.

Trained on McGregor's thirty-year creative archive, AISOMA suggests unexpected variations, new movement possibilities and unprecedented creative trajectories. Part research lab, part performance, BODY AS ARCHIVE brings the creative process itself on stage, making visible what is usually hidden and creating an immersive experience shaped by the lighting design of Theresa Baumgartner and live music by Yraki. Here, body, memory, archive and artificial intelligence converge within the new spaces of the Historical Archive.

Free admission upon reservation.

And the journey continues: from 1 to 3 June 2026, the new premises at the Arsenale open to the public for the first time!

A maggio Venezia cambia ritmo!
