Res Animata Studio

Res Animata Studio Small worlds, sharp stories. Handcrafted stop-motion studio based in Milan. We build everything in-house: puppets, miniature sets and frame-by-frame animation.

Res Animata is a stop-motion studio crafting small physical worlds to tell sharp, intelligent stories. We work with real materials, puppets and handmade sets to create visually rich films for brands, editorial projects and original narratives. Founded in Milan, born from Lovorphosis.

Teacher, the clocks are melting! — a picture book written by Roberto Grasso (co-founder of Res Animata Studio) and illustrated by the wonderful Annalaura Cantone, published by Moebius Edizioni.

A surreal journey inspired by the universe of Salvador Dalí:
a school trip, a very imaginative child, melting clocks, towering elephants, and a mysterious museum attendant with two long upward-curving moustaches.

Moving between reality and imagination, this book explores the power of art and fantasy — themes that also run deeply through our work in physical animation and storytelling.

For us, this marks an important milestone: our collaboration with Annalaura is part of a broader creative path we’re building together, across books, animation, and new narrative universes.

The book is now available in major Italian bookstores (Mondadori, Feltrinelli, Hoepli and others), and we’ll soon be hosting live presentations as well.

This is just the first chapter.

A small throwback, from autumn to now. 🍂🐌

This claymation video was originally made to celebrate our first 500 followers on Instagram.
A tiny, slow-paced world — very autumnal, very handmade — with a couple of clay snails quietly doing their thing.

Fast forward a few months:
today we’re more than 2,200 followers, and Res Animata has been officially alive for just over a year.

We like to think this video still represents us quite well:
slow processes, tactile materials, attention to detail, and stories that take their time.

If you want to follow our stop-motion experiments, tiny worlds and behind-the-scenes moments, you’ll find us on Instagram too. 🐌✨

🎄❤️🧠 Does Santa exist or not?

Heart and Brain never fully agree.
One wants to believe. The other keeps asking uncomfortable questions.

This year marked almost one year since we officially founded Res Animata — and sometimes it still feels just as unreal.

We built our studio from scratch, produced our first commissioned works, developed original projects, and learned how to balance ambition with reality.

The future may not fully exist yet — but we’re animating it, one frame at a time.

Thank you for being part of the journey.

A small gesture can reshape everything.

Make a choice.

Buone Feste da tutto il team di Res Animata! 💛

🎄🎅 Christmas is always a rush… even for Santa.

Maybe that’s why he doesn’t always stick the landing when coming down the chimney. 🎁💨

It’s not perfect — and that’s part of the fun.

Wishing you a Christmas full of laughter, magic, and a little controlled chaos.

🎄✨ Behind the scenes of Blackball's Christmas stop-motion film.

From handmade paper and felt sets to a playful 8-ball journey through surreal slides and a Christmas forest, this project was entirely built and animated by hand.

We loved collaborating with Blackball on their Season’s Greetings video celebrating their partnership with Forestami, Milan’s reforestation project. 🌳

A festive story with a very real commitment behind it: planting trees and building a greener future, one small action at a time.

🎥 Behind the scenes of our Glycemic Peak

Before our little brain could dramatically crash on the sugar mountain…
there was a lot going on behind the camera.

Miniatures being built.
A character being felted by hand.
Foam mountains shaped into snowy slopes.
Tiny magnetic skis engineered.
Lights, camera, frame-by-frame animation.
And finally: editing, timing, and a bit of magic.

This is why we love stop motion:
every project becomes a small world where writing, sculpture, costume-making, photography, set design and animation all live together.

A handcrafted, messy, joyful process — and, despite the long hours, never boring.

✨ Hope you enjoyed the final video as much as we enjoyed making it.
More little worlds (and behind the scenes) coming soon.

December comes with a few certainties:

🎄 endless lunches and dinners
🍰 and an unavoidable glycemic peak

We imagined it like this:
a huge sugar mountain our brain enthusiastically decides to climb…
only to crash dramatically about an hour after the third slice of panettone. 😴

Behind the joke, there’s what we love doing most:
real materials, physical sets, frame-by-frame animation, and small handcrafted stories that talk about very human experiences — like eating way too much during the holidays.

A playful little stop-motion exercise, made just for fun, and perfect to watch somewhere between dessert and a post-lunch nap on the couch.

Happy glycemic peak to everyone. 🎅🍽️

🔥 Among the works we love the most, this is one of the smallest.
And yet, one of the most magical. 🦉✨

This little felt owl was born during an intensive stop-motion workshop at IED Milano, with whom we’ve been collaborating for years between teaching, experimentation, and hands-on animation.

Built by a student from a simple piece of felt, it came to life on a snowy miniature set — wool campfires, paper mountains, sugar snow — and was animated frame by frame.

A simple exercise, almost playful, but very close to how we love to work:
real materials, small worlds, and stories shaped slowly by hand.

Maybe we’re sharing it now because, with the first snow of these days, we all feel a little bit inside that forest.
