This scene from "The Passion of the Christ" captures one of Mel Gibson’s most fascinating choices as a director.

Gibson chose to give a face and a story to the Roman soldier who, according to Christian tradition, pierced Jesus’ side with his spear: Longino (Cassius in the film).

The Gospel of John describes the soldier’s action, but never gives him a name. It was later Christian tradition that identified him as Longino, turning him into one of the most fascinating figures associated with the Passion.

Gibson’s choice is especially meaningful because the soldier does not remain an anonymous figure in the background. He becomes part of the story: a man ordered to carry out a brutal act, who finds himself face to face with the death of Christ and, according to tradition, comes to recognize the extraordinary nature of the man before him.

The spear, therefore, represents more than the moment of the wound. It becomes a symbol of an encounter — a man who, through what he witnesses, begins to see beyond what his eyes can perceive.

MEL GIBSON’S RESURRECTION OF CHRIST: A FILM THAT PROMISES TO GO BEYOND THE EMPTY TOMB

Mel Gibson has completed filming his highly anticipated follow-up to "The Passion of the Christ", titled "The Resurrection of the Christ".
The project will be released as two full-length films, filmed across several locations in Italy after 134 days of production.

The story will go far beyond Easter morning, exploring the Resurrection of Jesus, the spiritual realm, and the birth of the early Church, with locations including Jerusalem, Damascus, Rome, Egypt, and the desert.

Jesus will be portrayed by Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen. The first film is scheduled for May 6, 2027, with the second planned for May 25, 2028.

But for Christians, the greatest significance is not simply the film. It is the message that could once again reach millions of people:
