In 2022, musician and filmmaker Nick Kelly cycled from his home in Dublin to the Glastonbury Festival in Somerset, England - carrying his guitar, tent and all the other essentials. He was accompanied by his friend and ‘Dogs’ collaborator Seán Millar, who was following the same route on public transport. The pair stopped to perform in different venues along the route, making their way towards a grand finale at Glastonbury.

Nick’s charming documentary about the journey proves a celebration of sustainability in its many forms, while also allowing the filmmaker to thoughtfully reflect on his relationship with his late father. It’s a film that encourages viewers to stay in the saddle and keep pedalling, whatever the weather, traffic or gradient faced.

The Song Cycle (12A) screens in Garter Lane Arts Centre tonight at 7.30pm. Advance booking available in-person, online and 051 855038.

Ear worm alert. The Song Cycle is a quasi-musical, with live performances from various shows along the journey augmented by studio recordings of songs composed and performed by Nick and Seán.
Dogs’ debut album Joy, which includes many of the songs featured on The Song Cycle, including Only Home, was released in November 2024. Copies of the album will be available to purchase after the film screening in Garter Lane Arts Centre next Saturday.

The Song Cycle (12A) nationwide tour arrives in Garter Lane Arts Centre on Saturday next, July 18th. We're delighted to confirm that Nick Kelly, the writer and director of this feature length documentary, will introduce his film and participate in a post film Q&A.

It's always an honour to host visiting filmmakers at our screenings, but we have to say this appearance is unique. Nick will be arriving by bicycle, laden down with his guitar and merch. Ever polite, he has never turned down an invite to sing a few songs when requested.
