Vic Van Allen is a wealthy tech entrepreneur who allows his wife Melinda to take lovers in order to avoid divorce. Melinda is a magnetic, restless woman who flaunts her affairs at dinner parties, testing the limits of their open marriage. Their arrangement is a silent war. Vic watches. Melinda provokes. When her lovers start to disappear, the line between jealousy and murder begins to blur. Their Louisiana mansion becomes a gilded cage where passion and paranoia share the same bed.
Working with cinematographer Eigil Bryld, Adrian Lyne frames Vic and Melinda in cold, humid interiors and claustrophobic car rides. The juxtaposition of Melinda’s reckless sensuality — conveyed through Ana de Armas’s unguarded, volatile performance — is carefully balanced with Vic’s quiet control as Ben Affleck brings simmering rage to every glance. The result is a film of erotic tension, where silence says more than any accusation.
Somewhere between the tonal registers of Unfaithful and Gone Girl, the film uses this Vic and Melinda dynamic as both marriage and mind game. Vic cannot leave — his entire identity is tied to keeping Melinda — and it is only by letting her believe she is free that he keeps her close. The real affair is not with the other men. It is with danger. The staircase, the car, the bed: each becomes a battleground for who owns who.
The film was released on Hulu in the USA on 18 March 2022 and on Amazon Prime Video in the UK on 18 March 2022. Based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1957 novel, Adrian Lyne returned to erotic thrillers after a 20-year hiatus. The Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas off-screen romance during filming made Deep Water one of 2022’s most talked-about streaming releases.
