StuCon2012 is a student-led technology conference taking place at HKIS in Hong Kong from March 16-17, 2012. What makes this conference u
nique is that students are involved at all levels: helping design and organize it, maintain the website, and planning and running the workshops. This is truly a tech conference BY students…FOR students. What also makes it unique is that is is a 24-hour non-stop event! Groups arrive in HK in time for the opening ceremonies on Friday at 6pm, then (after an orientation session where events are showcased), workshops run in 4-hour blocks all night Friday and all day Saturday, culminating in a grand celebration event Saturday at 7pm, after which student groups are welcome to find a HK hotel or return home. All student groups, whether consisting of one person or ten, must be accompanied and supervised by a coach/teacher from their community. And every group that has at 3-5 students must come prepared to lead a 4-hour workshop (or two workshops for groups larger than 5): it’s like a potluck, where the participants bring the events. Workshops should be hands-on, with the expectation that all participants become highly fluent in some tech-related skill when they leave. More complex topics (such as movie making) can take two blocks, for a total of 8 hours. Our goal is for students to design and lead all workshops under the supervision of their coach, with ongoing events and activities throughout the weekend running in physical and virtual space. We hope to see students immersed in topics where they have interest, with ongoing contests, displays, workshops and presentations. Coaches and students will work throughout the school year to develop and plan for their workshops. In addition, several ‘gurus’ from the technology industry will be present to lend their expertise and enthusiasm.
