🎬 The Piano (1993) 15

One of the most acclaimed films of the 1990s comes to The Block Cinema this June.

Directed by Jane Campion and starring Holly Hunter, Harvey Keitel, and Anna Paquin, The Piano is a haunting and emotionally powerful story of silence, desire, repression, and self-expression.

Set in nineteenth-century New Zealand, the film follows Ada, a mute Scottish woman sent across the world for an arranged marriage, accompanied only by her daughter and the piano through which she communicates.

Winner of three Academy Awards, The Piano remains visually stunning, emotionally raw, and unforgettable on the big screen.

🎬 I Swear (2025) 15

A moving and humane new drama coming to The Block at Broomwood (Timperley).

Diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at fifteen, John Davidson grows up navigating a world that doesn’t always understand him — searching for dignity, purpose, and connection along the way.

Warm, honest, and quietly powerful, I Swear is a film about resilience, misunderstanding, and the importance of kindness.

🎬 The Name of the Rose (1986) 15

A remote monastery. A series of unexplained deaths. A world where knowledge can be dangerous.

This atmospheric mystery stars Sean Connery as William of Baskerville, a sharp-minded friar investigating disturbing events hidden deep within an isolated abbey.

Directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud and based on Umberto Eco’s celebrated novel, The Name of the Rose blends historical drama, murder mystery, and intellectual thriller into one of the great cinematic adaptations of the 1980s.

Dark, intelligent, and absorbing — and a rare chance to experience it on the big screen.

🎬 Paper Moon (1973) – Thursday 16 April

A con man. A child. Nothing straightforward.

Set in the dust and hardship of 1930s America, Paper Moon follows a drifting grifter and a sharp young girl who may — or may not — be his daughter. What starts as a simple job turns into an uneasy partnership on the road, built on small cons, quick thinking, and just enough trust to keep going.

Shot in striking black and white and directed by Peter Bogdanovich, the film is carried by the unforgettable pairing of Ryan O'Neal and Tatum O'Neal — who became the youngest Oscar winner for her performance.

Lean, funny, and unsentimental — this is storytelling stripped back and done right.

Stay for a short, friendly discussion afterwards if you’d like — this one tends to get people talking.

Come along and see it where it belongs — on the big screen.

🎬 Memories of Murder (2003)
This Thursday at The Block

One of the greatest crime films ever made.

Based on Korea’s first serial murder case, this gripping and unsettling film follows two detectives trying to solve a series of brutal killings — without the tools, experience, or certainty they need.

Directed by B**g Joon-ho (Parasite), Memories of Murder blends tension, dark humour, and human fallibility into something far more than a standard detective story.

This is not a tidy mystery. It lingers. It unsettles. It stays with you.
