Southwold Cinema - Electric Picture Palace

Southwold Cinema - Electric Picture Palace The Electric Picture Palace is a small but perfectly formed 70 seat cinema on the Suffolk coast. Annual membership is £10 and season membership £3.

Designed by John Bennett, the award winning building is owned and run by the Southwold Film Society, a charitable trust. 4 film seasons run during each year. This building is owned by the Southwold Film Society, a charitable trust, which created the Picture Palace from a 19th century stable and cart-shed in 2002. In 2012 it was extended into a garage at the east forming “Screen Two”, a foyer exten

sion, screening room and gallery, with an office and archive above. The installation of a “Royal Box” increases the seating capacity from 68 to 70. There was an Electric Picture Palace in Southwold which began showing silent films in the summer of 1912. It was close by, in the parallel road to the north, York Road, occupying buildings which were demolished in 1983 to be replaced by the Surgery and Orwell Court, a development of flats. Remembered by many, the Southwold Cinema as it became, survived until 1963. The Society runs four film seasons a year, three of ten weeks roughly following the school terms, with screenings on Friday and Saturday evenings, plus one five week season during the summer with screenings four nights a week. The idea is to recreate the heyday of cinema-going in a theatrical environment with commissionaire, usherettes and a rising cinema organ as a vital accompaniment to the showing of good films. You have to be a member to attend screenings but holidaymakers are welcome and may join for a season. A member can bring up to three guests who do not need to be members. Tickets are £6 front row Stalls, £7 elsewhere in the stalls, £8 circle, £15 royal box. National theatre tickets are £10. The cinema is available to hire for private parties and is licensed for weddings. If the Picture Palace is not open any goods on display may be purchased at 1 Bartholomew Green. To join or to book seats, call the Box Office on 07815 769565 or, for more details, call John Bennett on 01502 724340.

Our film Spring 2026 season has begun with enthusiastic audiences in attendance!

We have great films showing this season including such classics as Brief Encounter, The Bodyguard, The Sting, The Odd Couple and The Devil Wears Prada - to name just a few!!

Many films sell out quickly, and whilst we admire those who queue at the door on the night in the hope of a return ticket, it is always best to book in advance via the box office.

Interval time from the Upper Circle

That's right - as well as the Stalls (and a special Royal Box) we have a full upper circle with approx 20 seats.

Did you know there is a 'Royal Box' at the Picture Palace?

Created a few years ago, you and your partner can indulge in this unique cinematic experience. After arriving you will personally escorted up a special staircase to our very cosy Royal Box!

That's just what visitor Chris Richmond did with his partner on a recent visit to Southwold Electric Picture Palace and loved it!

Needless to say, with just seats for two the Royal Box is very popular so book well ahead to avoid disappointment.
