October, 1957. Nine-year-old Hogarth Hughes hears stories of a UFO that crashed into the sea.

Always on the lookout for mutant aliens, Hogarth finds a huge, metal-eating robot with an insatiable curiosity and equally insatiable appetite. But the extra-terrestrial's presence unleashes a wave of Cold War paranoia that threatens to engulf Rockwell unless Hogarth and his 50-foot friend can stop it.

Loosely based on the The Iron Man by Ted Hughes and relocated to a small town in Maine during the Cold War, this heartfelt animation explores the relationship between humans and technology and how true connections can be formed, even in times of uncertainty.

This screening is family- friendly! The film is rated PG

Boredom, bikinis and a blistering critique of the beauty myth. From its first seconds, Vera Chytilova’s ever-fresh Daisies kicks wickedly against the pricks and feels as if it was made today. This feminist milestone is an anarchic comedy of subversion whose approach to montage is as exuberant as the film’s two protagonists.

An innovative and brilliantly absurd masterpiece of the ’60s Czech New Wave, the film was made three years before the Prague Spring but dissent is clearly in the air. Daisies follows the misadventures of two young women both called Marie (played by Jitka Cerhová and Ivana Karbanová), who rebelliously scam rich dates, cut off their own heads and wreck an official feast. The film’s anarchic attitude saw it banned by the Czech authorities and it stayed under wraps for years.

Some have called the film’s freewheeling rage against the world proto-riot grrrl, and the two Maries (defiantly unholy) are a total riot. If you haven’t caught up with this genuine feminist classic, see why it’s as thrilling now as it was fifty years ago.

*JUST ADDED*

Melding melodrama with screwball farce, this black comedy was Pedro Almodóvar’s international breakthrough and secured his place at the vanguard of modern Spanish cinema.

Continuing the auteur’s exploration of the female psyche, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown tells the story of Pepa—played by the director’s frequent collaborator Carmen Maura—who resolves to kill herself with a batch of sleeping-pill-laced gazpacho after her lover leaves her. Fortunately, she is interrupted by a deliciously chaotic series of events.

The filmmaker channeled Hollywood inspiration into his own unique vision, arriving at the irreverent humour and vibrant visual sense that define his work today. With an exceptional ensemble cast that also includes Antonio Banderas and Rossy de Palma, this film shows an artist in total control of his craft.

Fresh from the success of the first two A Better Tomorrow films, in 1989 action maestro John Woo would unleash The Killer, a spectacular blend of explosive gunfights and dramatic performances, including the magnetic Chow Yun-Fat in one of his most memorable roles.

Ah Chong (Chow Yun-Fat) is a hitman whose latest job takes a wrong turn when, during a shootout at a lavish nightclub, he accidentally blinds singer Jennie by firing his gun too close to her eyes. Racked with remorse, Ah Chong decides to retire from his life of crime and help Jennie get a cornea transplant. But when Ah Chong's rancorous former boss betrays him, Ah Chong receives an unexpected helping hand from hot-headed police detective Lee Ying (Danny Lee, City on Fire).

An international sensation, The Killer put Woo on the radar of genre fans the world over and inspired waves of imitators, but none that could outclass it.

Haneke’s chilling, confrontational and controversial home-invasion thriller that redefined the genre. Disturbing, clinical and unforgettable, it shocked audiences worldwide before Haneke remade it shot-for-shot in 2007. The original is still the best.

A wealthy family are enjoying their lakeside retreat, only for their holiday to be shattered by the arrival of two seemingly polite young men, Paul and Peter. Arno Frisch delivers a horrifying turn as Paul, his actions implicating the audience through direct addresses to camera, questioning our appetite for watching violence as entertainment.

With this controversial treatise on violence and entertainment, Haneke issued a summation of his cinematic philosophy, implicating his audience in a spectacle of unbearable cruelty.

You’ll never watch horror movies in the same way again! Book your tickets now or join us for a full day of sadistic games with Rope (1948) and Nowhere (1997) also on Sat 23rd May! https://bit.ly/3OYbtTk

Joining our accidental and unofficial 'Be Gay, Do Crime' All Dayer!

Just before hosting a dinner party, Philip Morgan and Brandon Shaw strangle a mutual friend with a piece of rope, purely as a Nietzsche-inspired philosophical exercise. Hiding the body, they arrange a dinner party, welcoming their guests, including the victim's oblivious fiancée and the college professor whose lectures inadvertently inspired the killing.

Famously shot in 'real time and one take', Rope is a true Hitchcock classic, with a typically droll and brilliant performance by Jimmy Stewart.

Hitchcock’s audacious film sets out to prove there’s no such thing as getting away with murder, even if the central couple Brandon and Philip arrogantly believe they can. With the coded language and looks between the two men more than hinting at a love that was illicit in 1948, the tension rises as their perfect plan starts to unravel. Will it just be one murder before the night is through?
