The year is 2013. Its been 16 years since Snake Plissken's legendary rescue of the President from the prison island of Manhattan. In the years since a new President has taken power and declared the United States to be a land of moral absolutes: no smoking, no red meat, no alternative religious beliefs, no unapproved marriages - no freedom. A massive earthquake – The Big One – has hit Los Angeles, leaving it in ruins, completely surrounded by water, and making it the perfect no man's land to deport anyone, of any age, guilty of moral crime. From this new island hell an anarchist state emerges, consisting of an army of the discontent, led by brutal revolutionary Cuervo Jones. Enter Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell). Pressganged into service once again, Snake must complete another deadly mission; breach L.A and retrieve an invaluable item before Jones can use the devastating "Sword of Damocles" to destroy America. But when push comes to shove, where do Snake Plissken's loyalties truly lie?

In 1981, John Carpenter's Escape From New York introduced the world to Snake Plissken. In 1996 he resurrected this cinematic icon for Escape From L.A. Though not considered the classic the original is, Carpenter's sequel is full of big ideas, several of the best scenes of his career, and a political message that is achingly relevant in 2026. Carpenter himself considers the sequel better than the original.

A provocative and acclaimed synthesis of historical melodrama, murder mystery and gothic ghost tale.

One of the most personal films by Guillermo del Toro, The Devil’s Backbone is also among his most frightening and emotionally layered. Set during the final week of the Spanish Civil War, it tells the tale of a twelve-year-old boy who, after his freedom-fighting father is killed, is sent to a haunted rural orphanage full of terrible secrets.

Del Toro expertly combines gothic ghost story, murder mystery, and historical melodrama in a stylish mélange that, like his later Pan’s Labyrinth, reminds us the scariest monsters are often the human ones.

Manchester Indian Film Festival returns with a rich array of cutting-edge new cinema premieres from India and around South Asia, many of them cherry-picked from the finest film festivals around the world, plus restorations of magnificent classics of Indian cinema.

As***le (Gandu) directed by cult Bengali filmmaker called ‘Q’ (Qaushiq Mukherjee) blazed a trail when it was first shown at festivals. Still too outrageous to be openly screened in India, the film, which includes nudity, bad language and s*x, tells of a frustrated teenager named Gandu who is a penniless rapper who steals from his family to fuel his drug habit.

On discovering he has won the Lottery, he goes on a crazed drug musical bender with bad company, until he realises that his rapping career is taking off. Don’t bring your granny to this screening.

Singer-composer Neel Dutt’s directorial debut revisits the enduring wedding genre by following the Bengali nuptials of Sromona and Rohan, as they bring friends, relatives, and exes under one roof. This sharp ensemble drama peels back the spectacle of celebration to reveal a web of lies, fractures, and quiet disappointments.

Witty and emotionally grounded, it offers a contemporary portrait of love, identity, and societal expectation. The film premiered in Paris at the Gange Sur Seine 2025, where it won a Special Jury Award.

We are beyond exciting to present a special Northern Premiere of the newest 4K restoration of the wonderful Nadja courtesy of Arbelos Films and Radiance Films.

In 1993, invited by David Lynch to come up with a low-budget genre movie, Michael Almereyda (Tesla, Experimenter, Hamlet) came up with a moody, postmodern reimagining of the Dracula myth which draws inspiration from Dracula’s Daughter (1936) and André Breton’s surrealist novel Nadja.

The film follows estranged vampire twins Nadja (Elina Löwensohn) and Edgar (a young Jared Harris) as they reunite following their father’s death by the flamboyantly unhinged Dr. Van Helsing, played with relish by Peter Fonda. Spending joyless nights in New York, Nadja meets and falls in love with Lucy (Galaxy Craze) which triggers a new search for Van Helsing.

Absent from UK screens since its original release, the film’s striking visuals combines high contrast black-and-white 35mm cinematography with the hallucinatory grain of Pixelvision video. Now looking better than ever in this new 4K restoration of the director’s cut.

This screening will also include include a curation of Pixelvision short films from Speed & Strike + Electric Blue Cinema as well as introductory notes written by author Alison Rumfitt (Brainwyrms).

A tribute screening and celebration of graphic novelist and director Marjane Satrapi who sadly passed away on 4 June 2026

When Marjane Satrapi was nominated for Animated Feature Film, with co-director Vincent Paronnaud, she became the first woman in the history of the Oscars to have garnered such a nod.

Winner of the Cannes Jury Prize, Persepolis is based on Satrapi’s biographical graphic novel of the same name, which follows a precocious young girl in Tehran who comes of age during the country’s 1979 revolution and the Iran-Iraq war. Like the graphic novel, the film is in black-and-white and uses traditional animation techniques, achieving a striking palette that remains timeless.

Persepolis is based on Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel of the same name and follows her life in pre- and post-revolutionary Iran and then in Europe. The themes and content of Persepolis raised complaints within the Iranian government of the time ultimately leading to the film being blocked and banned from multiple film festivals and countries throughout the world.

Bigger Than Life presents this screening of Le Bonheur (Happiness) with an introduction by Agnès Varda expert, Hazel Shaw!

Young carpenter François and his wife Thérèse lead an seemingly idyllic life with their two children in a small suburb outside of Paris. When François meets an attractive post office employee while working in the next town over, he casually begins an affair that he believes can only supplement his existing happiness.

Filled with sunshine, flowers and picture-perfect picnics, Agnès Varda’s 1965 Le Bonheur (Happiness) is a piercing, radical work that unfurls with a sense of deadpan horror as it explores both the hypocrisies of the s*xual revolution and the traps of the nuclear family.

Varda was a founding member of the French New Wave and a pivotal part of Paris’ Left Bank Cinema. Her third feature is one of her most visually lavish films, utilising to devastating effect the pastoral setting of Fontenay-aux-roses and the lush gardens of the Île-de-France that so inspired the Impressionists.

Interference strikes back once again with some mid-week monster mayhem - presenting a rare screening of the stone-cold cult classic PUMPKINHEAD!!

Pumpkinhead marks the late Stan Winston's directorial debut, he was probably better known for his make-up and SFX work on legendary films such as Aliens, Terminator 2, Predator 1 &2 and Jurassic Park to name bit a few...this time however, he decided to flex his creative muscles behind the camera as well as in front of it with his stunning creature design.

Despite it's limited theatrical release at the time and it's relatively low budget - Pumpkinhead very quickly garnered a rabid cult following. Mixing classic creature feature vibes with an all encompassing southern-gothic atmosphere, Pumpkinhead is beloved by horror fans the world over - and for good reason!

Heading the cast you have the legendary Lance Henriksen (Aliens, The Terminator, Hard Target) he plays the part of a grieving father who calls upon the titular vengance demon to wreak bloody revenge. Of course, as is usually the case, this doesn't entirely go according to plan!
