The Argentine Film Festival presents The Films of Armando Bó and Isabel ‘Coca’ Sarli in a special one-night double bill on Thursday 25 June.
London cult cinema, The Nickel, will screen two of Isabel Sarli’s most notorious classics, Carne (Meat) and Embrujada [Bewitched) both directed by legendary filmmaker Armando Bo.
Together, Armando Bó and Isabel Sarli became one of the most controversial and commercially successful partnerships in the history of Latin American cinema. Pioneers of popular erotic cinemas, the pair made 28 films together, combining melodrama, eroticism, social critique and spectacle in productions that were transgressive, challenging the moral climate of the time, and pushing the boundaries of cinematic freedom during periods of political repression.
Often dismissed as exploitation cinema, Carne and Embrujada are amongst some of the most polarising films in Latin American cinema and occupy an uncomfortable space between objectification and liberation.
Nearly 50 years later they still provoke debate, yet Isabel Sarli’s on-screen presence is impossible to ignore.
