🎬 RESIDENT EVIL REVIEW 🎬

The new Resident Evil is a total reinvention.

Less Milla Jovovich-style action insanity. Much more straight horror.

And I completely understand why people will think it’s the best adaptation yet…

But I kind of miss the ridiculous old ones.

🎬 HEART OF THE BEAST SNAP REVIEW 🎬

Imagine The Revenant, but instead of fighting a bear, Brad Pitt has a dog helping him survive.

That’s basically the pitch — and it completely got me.

Pitt is fantastic, Odin the dog is ridiculously charming, and two scenes absolutely destroyed me emotionally.

🦋 The Butterfly Effect is one of our darkest favourite movies — and the closer you look at its time travel, the stranger it gets.

Sonita joins me to revisit the 2004 Ashton Kutcher cult favourite, as we break down its time-travel rules, the “plot holes” that actually have explanations… and the two that really don't.

Plus: the three main types of movie time travel, the film's long journey to the screen, its characters, script, and what The Butterfly Effect actually has to say about life.

One little line in the original Toy Story means something completely different after Toy Story 4.

Woody describes himself as a “lost toy” — something he desperately doesn't want to be.
Three movies later, that's exactly the life he chooses.

⚔️ One of my favourite things about Helm’s Deep is that neither side has to become stupid for the battle to work.

The defence is largely strategically sound. The Uruk-hai’s siege is extremely effective. In fact, they were going to win.

So does Helm’s Deep hold up when you actually analyse the battle strategy?

Is Gandalf arriving at Helm’s Deep a deus ex machina?

On paper, it almost sounds like one: the battle is lost, then cavalry suddenly appears and saves everyone.

But The Two Towers tells us exactly when Gandalf is coming — which is why I think the payoff feels earned rather than cheap.

The first time you watch The Two Towers, the Gandalf/Saruman fake-out is a great reveal.

But once you know Gandalf is standing there deliberately glowing, obscuring his appearance and apparently even sounding like Saruman, it becomes pretty funny.
It makes virtually no sense from Gandalf’s perspective — but perfect sense from Peter Jackson’s.

Andy Serkis’s performance as Gollum was much more complicated than simply putting on a motion-capture suit.
Scenes could involve Serkis performing alongside the other actors on location and then recreating elements of that performance for Gollum’s digital incarnation.

And yes — that meant actually getting into the freezing river for Gollum’s fish scene.

Remember that cool moment where Neo slides open his Nokia 8110? Well they had to add this feature as the phone didn’t actually have it.

This left many people dissapointed when they bought the phone and found out. Luckily then Nokia released the 7110 which DID slide open.

Of all the things I expected from a Ridley Scott crime thriller starring Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz and Cameron Diaz... this wasn't one of them.

The Counselor gave us one of the strangest scenes I've ever seen in a major Hollywood movie.

What's a completely random movie moment that you'll never forget?
