🎬 Leaving aside its title, Fiennes’s film showcases the semiotician Slavoj Zizek’s beguiling theories on cinematic subtext. Whether it’s the mother superior’s singing of Climb Every Mountain, or Alex and the Droogs at the Korova Milkbar, Zizek has some fascinating angles on familiar, and not so familiar films.

🎬 Last year saw the loss of the great surrealist director, whose folksy characters and disturbing sound world make such queasy bedfellows. In this his darkest film he again adopts the highway as metaphor for transitional states of being (cf. Wild at Heart, The Straight Story).

RUGGLES OF RED GAP (1935) + short film POURING WATER ON TROUBLED OIL (2023) screening on Monday 13th October 2025 at 7.30pm

📍King Street Cinema, Corn Exchange, IP1 1DH

Join us for a commemorative double screening, with a classic from the Wild West which shares its birthday with the Society, alongside a short documentary which revisits Dylan Thomas' reflections during his trip to Iran in 1951.

🎬 The feature to celebrate our 90th birthday year has Charles Laughton as an English butler transferred to the Wild West when his employer loses him in a poker game. Laughton had appeared in a number of Holywood films but this was the first to exploit his comic gifts. McCarey effectively marshals a number of gifted bit players in supporting roles.
