Wonderful news from Alchemy Film & Arts, who have secured BFI funds from The National Lottery to pursue further digitisations and presentations of our back catalogue, dating back to the 1960s when our founding members first formed the club.
We're delighted that our 1965 - 1980 Hawick Pictorials will screen bigger and clearer than ever before at Heart of Hawick over the coming months, alongside other archival treasures.

NEW FUNDING, NEW PROJECT
We are proud to launch ‘Oor Ain Film Archive’, a major new film preservation and screen heritage project celebrating Hawick and Scottish Borders communities on film.
As covered on the scorcher front page of this week's The Hawick Paper, the project explores the social histories and industrial legacies of our town and region thanks to a £140,000 grant from the BFI's , awarding funding.
Taking place between autumn 2025 and spring 2026, ‘Oor Ain Film Archive’ encompasses the digitisation and restoration of much-loved and rarely-seen archive films by Hawick and Borders communities; a season of screenings and public events over the coming autumn/winter; a young people’s creative learning initiative; a training and skills enhancement programme for Alchemy staff; and the development of a permanent online resource dedicated to local archive films.
The project marks the 60th anniversary of the first ‘Hawick Pictorial’ – what became a series of popular annual snapshots of the year in Hawick on film, made by founding members of amateur cineaste club and long-term Alchemy partner Hawick Film Group between 1965 and 1980.
Key details on our new screenings programme, which includes all eleven Hawick Pictorials plus accompanying treasures from the archive in a newly digitised format, can be found in the comments below.
