💀COMING NEXT WEEK! Sat 25 July 7.30pm THEATRE OF HORRORS: THE SORDID STORY OF PARIS' GRAND GUIGNOL + WRITER'S INTRO

Tickets on sale now via the Electric Palace web site, or in person 30 minutes before showtime.

🫦 Tracing the story of the centuries-old, taboo-busting theatre dedicated to the bizarre, the bloody and the shocking. With writer’s introduction from Madeline Despenser.

🩸In 1897 Oscar Méténier invented the Grand-Guignol. Live depictions of death, bloody melodramas, screams of the victims and the audience: here is the story of this Parisian theatre of horrors that revolutionized the depiction of death in art. In a back alley in the seedy Pigalle district of Paris, a former chapel became a theatrical institution forged in naturalism, controversy and grisly spectacle.

Over the next 65 years, it would actively provoke revulsion, celebration and begrudging global esteem.

More than a half century after its final performance, the Grand Guignol remains one of the most wildly misunderstood and profoundly influential traditions in entertainment history.

From horror films to tabloid journalism, avant-garde theatre to the true-crime genre, France’s ‘Theatre of Death’ is still slicing, gouging and spurting its pervasive way through culture both high and low.

🌞 Showing this Saturday; for fans of Americana, alt.rock, rebel country and rock n' roll....
🎸Selected by Summer Music Meltdown curator James Endeacott.

❤️‍🩹 Sat 18 7.30pm BE HERE TO LOVE ME + Larry Jon Wilson short + late bar
The turbulent life of alt.rock pioneer Townes Van Zandt, who sacrificed everything for his music. Plus Larry Jon Wilson short.

James says:

"Singer-songwriter Townes van Zandt was at the center of Austin's outlaw country scene in the 1970s, but, while friends like Waylon Jennings and Steve Earle went on to mainstream stardom, the mercurial Van Zandt retreated into a haze of alcoholism and mental illness.

Through interviews and rarely seen live footage recorded throughout Van Zandt's performing and recording career, this sympathetic documentary traces his work and life, which was cut short on New Year's Day 1997, when he was 52.

We will also be showing a 30 minute short about another country outlaw Larry Jon Wilson. A Perfect Why Not chronicles the recording of Larry's first album for almost 30 years in 2007 and has never been seen in public before.

Prepare to fall in love with these two late, great singer songwriters this weekend."

Overheard today...

“There are few things better when it’s really, really hot than going to your local cinema during the day. It is air-conditioned… someone has spent millions of pounds producing something to entertain you, and you can have a mint choc chip ice-cream.*”
