Poly Falmouth Falmouth's local theatre, archive, cinema and art gallery. Promoting innovative art and education in Cornwall since 1833.

The Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society aims to promote innovation in the arts and sciences, with particular focus on the county of Cornwall. Established in 1833 to promote the ideas of the men who worked at Perran Foundry near Falmouth, the RCPS still encourages innovation, but now in various disciplines. Currently the board is working hard on re-establishing The Poly as a cultural, historical and

scientific hub right in the heart of Falmouth. We can only do this with your continued support, and we hope that many of you consider becoming members of the society to help support our aims and create a wonderful, dynamic and sustainable society and venue for future generations in Cornwall. Our weekly drop-in sessions are back!

Whether you’re a thrower looking for a wheel to rent, or a hand builder wanting to develop your skills, these self-led community sessions give you quality time in our well equipped studio. There's always a member of staff on hand to answer questions and give guidance.

- 12.5kg bags of clay available for purchase from just £20
- 3 wheels available for use * pre-booking via email highly recommended! *
- Firings from £12.50 per shelf
- Metal and wooden tools, knives, batts, whirlers/banding wheels, sponges, paint brushes, etc, all free to use as you make!

🗣️ REGENCY TEENAGERS; FLIRTING OR PHILOSOPHISING?

A rare image of Caroline, painted by Samuel Laurence, is the starting point of this investigative talk about the three children of Robert Were Fox II FRS.

Anne-Maria, Barclay and Caroline were encouraged to keep and share their journals. Caroline’s was published in 1882, 11 years after her death. Unhappily for us, her original volumes and those of Anna Maria were burnt after Anna Maria’s death in 1897. However, Barclay’s journals survived and were published in 1979.

The Poly's Spring Gallery (Ground Floor)

Theo's material-focused work, inspired by Cornwall's maritime landscape, explores weathered boats and harbour remnants. Sitting between painting and sculpture, each piece is built from layers of reclaimed wood, fishing nets and harbour debris, then worked with thick oil paint—applied, scraped back and rebuilt—letting the materials' history show through.

Rather than romanticising the coast, Theo focuses on the physical reality of objects shaped by time, labour and nature. Rugged and tactile, the works convey the weight, character and history of Cornwall's maritime environment.

Entry is free and everyone is welcome!

📅 Saturday 12th September, 6pm

Neil Bentley and Richard Heap had a dream to tackle one of the world's most spectacular and difficult free-climbs - the 3000-foot "Salathé Wall" on El Capitan in Yosemite Valley.

This film follows their adventure as they try to come to grips with the unremitting nature of the granite terrain, with five days of living in a vertical world and, more importantly, with the conflict that arises when dreams meet reality.

To be shown with three short films from Richard Heap.
